Adding Abigail Disney to the list of Responsibly-Behaving Rich People. This is the latest instalment in the list of reasons for that:

Right up there with Nick Hanauer, Mark Cuban, and others.

Comments in her Twitter thread above-linked led me to Chamath Palihapitiya as well, whom I guess I need to learn more about. Informed opinions on him are welcome.

Now if you'll excuse me, I have to go see a pharmacy about an APAP device later this morning. And when I get back from that inquiry, it's back to the job search.

First time I'd seen a Max Planck quote at an activists' march on Parliament Hill.

Here's another one I liked from that march.

Now this is something that caught my attention while checking my Blogger reading list this morning:

https://complicationsensue.blogspot.com/2020/03/brilliantly-dumb-decisions.html

Alex Epstein has a couple of books on the art of scriptwriting for film and TV that you might want to look up as time and access allow. But the blog alone is worth a couple of hours for anyone already inclined in that direction.

The specific reference to Jaws here...

I don't agree with the idea.

Reminder: I worked with the CBC's Ottawa newsroom back in the 1990's as a courtroom artist on freelance. I also count several reporters as friends and friendly acquaintances through SF&F fandom channels. This happens, fans are in every line of work, including journalism and the public services of the world, so deal with it.

Back on point: there is a tendency to blame "the media" as a group for sensationalizing every single bad-news story as it develops. I think that stereotyping has roots in facts that were true once upon a time. Going back a century, yes. That problem has been getting addressed over the generations, from the j-school classrooms of the US, UK, Canada and elsewhere across the planet to the newsrooms themselves. Those journalism schools have websites, some of them publish material on best practices currently in play - Ryerson in Canada, Columbia and Poynter in the US all coming to mind right now - and we might help ourselves during this particular crisis to go have a look at those. I'll try to remember to amend this posting with linkages relevant.

Anyway, there's my point for the moment.

More on other topics as the day goes by.

The story as reported so far is here:

https://www.cbc.ca/news/indigenous/indigenous-official-languages-petition-1.5494939

I've said it before, and admitting that I'm descended from European immigrants up front alongside that fact, that if I had my way, every Canadian would be fluent in - at mimimum! - four languages: English, French, one Indigenous language, and one more from anywhere else on the planet. Partly as a matter of beefing up our brain-skill-set in general and partly as a matter of ethics.

Jenna Robar's proposal strikes me as perfectly in line with my thoughts, and I am inclined to see it as one more in a set of potential job-creation engines for Canada to power its future with.

And if you want a look at the petition itself?

Yes, I'm signing the petition.

So apparently, there's a Twitter account to keep interested parties up to date on observations of that system.

Imperfect as it always was, the people who've worked across the decades on this series have a tradition of trying to better their work...and after all, there was that educational mandate, right?

Looking at Charlie Stross' moderation policy over at his Diary site, and it occurs to me that they can be adapted to my context somewhat. There are specific changes of context that need making - allowing for Dreamwidth's servers' location (USA) and mine own person's physical location (Canada) and the two are not one and the same - but nothing seems insurmountable to adaptation.

To be clear: I haven't really had much in the way of problems so far, not since switching from Livejournal to Dreamwidth. But it seems like something that might be profitable to anticipate before it becomes a real concern.

Am I worrying too soon?

I am impressed.

Again, spoiler warnings in effect if you read this before watching the episode...

To everyone who worked on that story, my thanks for work well done.

I happily discovered for myself yesterday that this is now in retailers' hands in Ottawa-Gatineau.

The annoying thing is that our Gregorian calendar only allows for twelve months.

As a sidebar to some of the recent confusion centred around several continuing stories in the news services: There's a "developing story" blurb that NPR tacks onto fast-moving stuff from time to time to caution readers/viewers/listeners with that I like for situations just like this one. Might be that it ought to become part of journalistic "best practice"...?

I went to the event described in this article:

http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/ottawa/ottawa-racist-graffiti-solidarity-synagogue-1.3859097

I couldn't not go. Not with the news of acts of vandalism across the city, and the ongoing concerns about the US political situation that many see as one of the triggers of these crimes. It helped me with my anxiety issues for several good hours.

I hope that I was of help to others by being there.

Something I was reminded of this morning, via the CBC's Sunday Edition. You won't agree with all the choices of the authors on that list and that's right and proper, but maybe it'll start a discussion of equally helpful alternatives or additions.
