We have got to get private equity out of health care. Long term care, included. Everywhere.

Link is to a report filed with The New Yorker by Yasmin Rafiei.

And I found that out today on my way back from a trip to a long-term care facility.

How am I supposed to trust pharmacies of any affiliation during a Pandemic that's still in progress when they do stuff like this?

There was a meeting at Parliament Hill yesterday, and we have names of Conservatives happy to meet with Convoy Crowd people.

I really do not like the idea of the Ontario wings of the Liberal and New Democrat parties taking aim at each other instead of at the Ford regime.

In fact, the idea disgusts me. It's self-sabotage and undermines the will of the Ontario voters.

[personal profile] siderea makes some notes about the monkeypox situation. Once again, we are likely to be Not Paranoid Enough about the things that we should be, because the organized bigots are going to start leveraging this too to restore their power over their chosen prey-groups if they haven't already. And that will likely undermine the public health measure we should already be undertaking.

(Should I use "Augh!" or "Virus Don't Care" for this one?)

Seems to me there might be a political fight at CBS HQ soon, if not now, between the bosses of the news division vs. those of the Star Trek offices...because I've seen the content and casting of the current Trek series. And have you noticed who the news division's taking on as commentators? Mulvaney and who else?

Yes, I am absolutely speculating in an ill-informed way here. It looks to me like the two divisions of the company are going to be at cross-purposes.

So this is something to anticipate:

We've seen what happens when dictators take the countries under their control down such roads before, haven't we?

Repurposed from comments I made in the Maple Leaf Lounge thread at TrekBBS:

If Trump gets back in the White House - or if worse than Trump takes his place there - I fear that we are going to see him try to order an invasion of Canada to install someone like Pat King, Tamara Lich, Christopher Garrah, Nicholas St. Louis, Benjamin Dichter, Steeve Charland, etc. as his preferred prime minister.

Take him at his word on this, and take this as the warning that it is. Please.

I believe that Trump is exactly that stupid and that cruel. He's announced what he wants to happen to us. And his supporters on both sides of the border have already been rallying,

...though things in Centretown and the Parliamentary Precinct seem to have gone quiet enough for the night.

We've had at least one reporter ducking beer-can tosses. (A reporter I actually got to say "hello" to once.)

We've had a helicopter violating federal no-fly zones. (Whose pilot ought to be losing their license and soon, over this.)

We've had Confederate, Trumpist and Nazi flags carried by "protestors" alongside the Gadsden flag in the core.

We've had people jumping up and down on the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

We've had the statue of Terry Fox on Wellington Street repeatedly desecrated today.

We've had His Trumpness endorsing those bad actors at his latest Nuremberg Stunt tonight.

I've had enough.

I had to pass within breathing distance of several people who looked very much like they were lining up at Blair Station to board the O-Train to join the "fun" downtown, and I was not able to keep my cool about it. Fortunately, we all had other places to be and quickly. (I'm hearing that the Confederation Line was having issues again today, so they might not have gotten there.)

This has not been the best day, despite my staying clear of the epicentre of the mess.

1. Reading about this "Freedom Rally" crap on Twitter. Apparently, there were pro-fascist/anti-vaccination "rallies" in major cities across Canada today, including Ottawa because national capital city, right?

I have no respect for these people. None.

More detail...I was on Elgin Street picking up stuff this morning, and spotted someone hauling a white-on-black version of the Gadsden flag heading north, probably towards Parliament Hill.

WTH, guy?

2. My printer refusing to print out my provincial confirmation paperwork for tomorrow's booster appointment.

In case anyone's wondering: I am NOT interested in NFTs. Why should I enable eco-hostile, money-laundering crap?

And then there's this angle from SPLC's Michael Edison Hayden:

As I type this, Atomic Blonde is replaying on Showcase Canada. I've seen it twice at the cinemas, as noted here and here, back in 2017.

Seeing the early scenes of it again before I turned off the TV - I have the DVD, so re-watching isn't currently a problem for me - kickstarted a bit of resentment in my brain. Remember, the movie is set in 1989 in Berlin. Right at the end of the Soviet-American Cold War that was.

When I think about the opportunities given us by the end of that Cold War, and how so much of that was thrown away for reasons ranging from accidental short-sightedness to straight-up malice to - possibly, in rare instances? - noble intentions, and how those choices set up the human race for the nightmares now underway across the planet, I want to scream in rage and grief yet again for what was thrown away.

Dammit.

Just got the news alert e-mail from the Toronto Star.

Dammit. Dammit. Dammit.
