Good story.

Yeah, I'd say calling Putin's statement "chilling" is understating it. I agree with Mikhail Kasyanov ("Putin is intensifying his actions to destroy Russia and is essentially announcing the start of mass repressions against those who don't agree with the regime," he said. "This has happened in our history before, and not only ours.").

Setting up an us vs. them, with "they are trying to destroy us" isn't usually so plainly spoken.

(Of course, I doubt that any right-wing folks in the West will see the echoes of/in their own rhetoric. )

They believe they've already benefited from what he's done. They'll expect more in return for more from them...
