This...house...was used as a location on last week's _Strange New Worlds_:

Political Gunfight at the CBS Corral?
Mar. 30th, 2022 05:54 pmSeems to me there might be a political fight at CBS HQ soon, if not now, between the bosses of the news division vs. those of the Star Trek offices...because I've seen the content and casting of the current Trek series. And have you noticed who the news division's taking on as commentators? Mulvaney and who else?
Yes, I am absolutely speculating in an ill-informed way here. It looks to me like the two divisions of the company are going to be at cross-purposes.

So...Toronto and Trek
Mar. 28th, 2022 01:08 pmI was wondering how long it was going to take for this to happen. Apparently, Strange New Worlds, the Pike-focused series, is doing location shoots around downtown Toronto...which will finally get to be itself on-camera.

Noting that the "police cruiser" was deliberately detailed to not look like an official Toronto police cruiser. There are several possible reasons for that: avoidance of "paid duty" fees, lack of script approval, and quite possibly not wanting their rented vehicle to be mistaken for a real cruiser for safety reasons unrelated to any other concerns.
(Although that faux prison bus with "Illinois State Penitentiary" detailing is poking holes in my theory.)

Amusement in 3D Props For SF Scenarios
Mar. 23rd, 2022 08:09 amI do seem to recall devices looking like this one lurking in backgrounds across multiple science-fiction-type TV series across the decades. A rentable prop somewhere in Hollywood's many warehouses, I'm sure. Depending on the series, the purpose of the prop certainly varied a fair bit!
Well, remember I was talking about Star Trek last posting?
Seems I've missed recording everything from the fourth episode of Prodigy onwards. So I can't watch "Time Amok" - aired last night - as I planned. No, I'm not sure about my access to Crave here.
Foot? Meet phaser beam. Phaser beam? Foot. Consider yourselves introduced.

Counter-programming.
I'm a Star Trek fan. I watch Coroner.
So CTV Sci-Fi and CBC TV have me in conflict with myself and since I'm not sure of the limits of the household PVR, I'm worried about how it's going to handle multiple shows I want to keep watching. All on the same night, different channels, my paranoid self is expecting.
Privileged peoples' problems, right?

Good Things About Yesterday
Jan. 9th, 2022 02:21 pmI got my debit card PIN problem fixed up at the bank. (Sadly, this is an issue that has to be fixed in person, one of the few banking issues that has to be fixed that way.)
I used some Christmas gift-money to buy a personal DVD copy of Black Widow.
There was reassurance that my local comics dealer is still operational, and was able to reassure the staff that I have not forgotten my obligations to them. More pointedly, that I anticipate starting to get caught up on my reading next weekend because payday timing.
The local custom-t-shirt printer can work with PNG files I bring for them, and that they can print on 3XL t-shirts.
The British mystery novels that inspired the CBC TV series Coroner are still in print as of two years ago, and available through local booksellers.
It may be possible for me to finally get a used Wacom Cintiq without breaking myself financially. More on this anon, I hope.
New battery for the cell-phone, finally. Been worrying about the battery I bought with it for a few weeks after four or five years. Didn't think the shop I bought the new battery from would have it in stock yet.

Trek: DSC: But to Connect
Dec. 30th, 2021 10:05 pmDone watching "...But to Connect" on Star Trek: Discovery.
That wasn't exactly a bottle show. Close, but not exactly so. There was still a sense of grand scale, scope, stakes on multiple fronts, and events moving at speed. Everyone being true to themselves...and I think this chapter worked. My thanks to the performers and production team!

Dec. 2nd, 2021 10:19 pmOne word I was most pleased to hear this week:
arie'mnu
And there were other moments as well throughout the story. A story that's being given time to "breathe" properly, as far as I can see.
Spoilers in the comments...

Some random notes:
- Beth Simons writes for Spacing Toronto about the discovery of incomplete headstones made for Jewish cemetery use.
- I watched Star Trek: Prodigy tonight. Not bad. Some cringey bits of dialogue, or maybe it was the character interactions that annoyed more than the dialogue. More believable than I'd like in places, maybe? I have to remember that most of the main characters are newly escaped-from-enslavement children here.
- I got somewhat lucky today: someone else cancelled, so my molar repair gets moved up the dentist's schedule to tomorrow morning.
- My Eye Institute exam got pushed back again, this time to next February. This is...I think, the third rescheduling for the eye exam.

And Bruce Arthur raises this terrifying prospect about the future of pro sports in Toronto, Canada...and maybe about the future of Canadian politics whether Mr. Arthur realizes it or not yet.

I'm not sure what I think about the Inhuman angle yet. I would not be surprised, though, if Kamala Khan's power set were being modified for MCU purposes mainly because the management doesn't want Reed Richards' power set seen as a knock-off of hers.
