So.

International Womens' Day.

First anniversary of the declaration of Pandemic by the World Health Organization.

Job search continues.

Local weather is warming up again, with the official start of local spring being two weeks away.

This afternoon, I'll be watching the Ottawa Public Library's "Tech Cafe" session on how to turn your digital photo collections into hardcopy books. This might be useful given my fixation on local street names' histories and the imagery of the various styles of name signage across the city.

And other stuff going on too.

More later.

So I was waiting for a bus on Bank Street, just north of the Rideau River across from Billings Bridge Mall in 2008...and I spotted these critters.

It's stuck in "Closing the Library" mode, and has been for over 2 hours as I write this. A quick web search tells me this has been a common problem for people using Photos as part of the High Sierra version of Mac OS X. Some people have had to put up with it for 12-18 hours.

I'm not sure of which solution idea of the several published so far to trust here.

I still have them. The first is the A70, the second is the S5 IS. I currently use a Rebel T5 EOS, including for this picture. I'd need to check if my stockpile of rechargeable batteries is still up to the challenge of supporting them.

Additional note: I used Air Miles to get that T5. Took me only ten years, I think!

Hey, [personal profile] rfmcdonald, didn't you take a pic of a giant mockup of the older camera once?

During the current round of culling going on at my place, I rediscovered this ribbon from twenty years ago. I think I was one of three people who was editing the Ottawa SF Society Statement newsletter that year...and there's the confirmation:

Me, Joel Polowin - AKA [personal profile] bunsen_h - and the late and still-beloved Sharon Fall co-owned that nomination for Fan Achievement (Organizational).

Noting this for future reference. There's slides in my mother's place that can stand rescuing, hopefully. Another side effect of today's ByMUG meeting, this is.

Has anyone reading this had any dealings with Unsplash? If so, what's your opinion of the organization?

(I note that they're headquartered in Montréal at present, so there's that. Whether it matters?)

The main reason for asking is that they currently have an arrangement with Serif re: the Affinity suite of graphic design software. I just discovered this by opening up my copy of Affinity Publisher for the first time. There's a tab marked "Stock" - as in "stock images", I suspect - and when I clicked on it, the Unsplash logo and an invitation to use images from their site appeared.

From 2009.

I still say we need them in public places. No matter what Bell's balance sheets seem to say to them.

1. So there's this café on Somerset West that I've visited once and would like to revisit at some point after things re-settle enough and I have a steady day-job again. Apt613 published a profile on their reopening process that got my attention.

2. Some opinions held by neighbours across the city to consider re: how to finance...police or public safety or whatever we end up calling the service from now on. And to what ends.

3. Photography as Food Bank fundraiser during the Time of Pandemic.

4. The Four-Day Work Week may be a reality for more people from now on. Taylor Blewett at Postmedia Ottawa (AKA the Ottawa Citizen) reports on one company's leaning into that direction. I suspect it's not going to be a thing every employer can or should do, but it might be helpful in some ways.

5. Yes, I'm still job-hunting. And doing laundry. More later.
