Why would any job search website list "Galway" as a Canadian province?

Mandy.com is set up for the Film/TV business, specifically. Why do I look there too in addition to the other sites I've mentioned? Because you never know.

For election clerking position with the County Clerk's Office in Cook County, Illinois. I got an offer letter intended for someone with the same given name-family name combination as me living a lot closer to Cook County than Canada-bound me.

I was at St. Laurent Mall today, having lunch in the food court on the second floor, and the almost-still-kids down at ground level working their way through a list of what they see as Christmas/Winter Holiday-themed songs started into a number I wouldn't have expected to make the cut:

"Halellujah", as written by Leonard Cohen.

There you go.

Now here's a thing I didn't expect to see lawsuits about, let alone the cross-border variety. I didn't expect orthodontic retainers to become a mail-order business at all.

Just leaving this here for investigation/discussion...

My cellphone just got a call allegedly from Cornwall, but all in Chinese if I recognized the syllables spoken correctly. Cannot tell you what dialect, mind you. Nor what was actually said, for that matter. I'm not fluent in that language.

Back to the job search and other communications.

I've got this weird idea in my brain at the moment suggesting that some third party is playing sick games at Trudeau and Wilson-Raybould's joint expense. I've got two, maybe three ideas of varying sketchiness as to who it might be and why.

Maybe it's all the Trump-Russia craziness going on, with a side of Seth Abramson's musings about that being the culmination of decades-long work. Maybe I'm just scared silly.

I want to be wrong about this. And I know my vague theory is extremely vague right now...

Last weekend, I finally managed to persuade one to hop right past me as if I weren't going to try to turn said rabbit into hassenpfeffer at any second. I stood still as I could, having turned away from the rabbit't intended route down the bike path and motioned "go ahead".

The tactic worked. Never had before.

So I'm hearing this morning from local newsstand operators that the Toronto Star is delaying retail sales of today's edition outside of the GTA until tomorrow morning. True or false?

I've been used to being able to buy that paper the day it comes off the presses at one local retailer or another somewhere around Ottawa - despite living in Ottawa - for decades. I don't like the idea that this is a habit that TorStar feels a need to make however many Ottawa-based paying customers stop doing. And then there's the rest of the "same-day's travel range from the GTA" region whom I suspect are in the same boat.

I knew him going back to the Usenet days on rec.arts.comics.* and I found out yesterday that he'd died over the weekend.

Still taking that news in, to be honest. And I'm still holding something for a friend of his, and we never got around to setting the delivery up.

The top five countries looking at my NCF home page as of this point of this month:

1. USA
2. Germany
3. China
4. Canada
5. Seychelles

Wondering why that is.

So, per the stats wherever LJ's feeding me from, June has already started. But as I type this there's still three hours left in May. There's been this consistent daily lead time of three hours. Or lag time. I'm not sure which term is applicable here.

Anyway.

Thanks to Greg Rucka's Lazarus Tumblr site, there's this thing researching into the possibility of human cells being modified to serve as solar batteries of a sort. And here I go, fanboy reflexes immediately thinking of Kryptonian biology. Big surprise, huh? We're probably a long ways from anything even remotely resembling that point, assuming this research has legs. Some of you out there will understand the ideas Bioplastiq is tossing around here far better than I.

Keeping that "Next Nature" site bookmarked, though. In case of other weirdness.

Today, I've been working on tagging what is now about 41,300 image files I have stored on my computer via iPhoto. That's going back to 2003, back when I got my first Mac computer. I'd had the Canon A70 for a few months prior to that, if memory serves. Just before my Dad died, I think. Getting that camera might've been one of the last steps before actually buying that iBook. Lots of tagging to do and it's nowhere near done yet.

There's some other stuff percolating in the brain, but I'll leave it there for the moment.

I wrote this up for the Pen and Paper writers workshop earlier tonight. It related to a story shared by [livejournal.com profile] rfmcdpei today.

So I’m back to networking and searching and researching. Nothing new there, although the mix of jobs available keeps on changing. So do the resources used to chase those leads down. One of those leads, however, gave me a surprise this morning.

That resource is Workopolis. A web service spun out of the Globe and Mail as being somewhat of a distraction from its core business over a decade ago, Workopolis is one of a number of web sites devoted to making their money from advertisements aimed at Canadian job-seekers. Whether the ads are for jobs themselves or for services aimed at job-seekers doesn’t really matter a great deal.

And that’s the short version of what Workopolis is. A longer version of the explanation would take more time than any of us here at the moment can spare.

At present, I have about twenty “alerts” set up with Workopolis. Some are for specific types of jobs. Others are dedicated to watching what specific employers are seeking in prospective employees. Sometimes, those alerts will trigger unanticipated results. Including that surprise I mentioned at the top.

In this case, I had the alert subscription tagged as “ArtsMedia-Ottawa”. The rationale was that I wanted to keep an eye on job leads in – you guessed it! – arts and the media on a local scale. I have others for national and provincial-level leads. But the results evolved away from my intentions, and never more so than that day.

I’ll cite the text – partly to explain, partly to pass the word along, and partly to run up the word count:

The Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia seeks an Archbishop to oversee, supervise and rule the Spiritual and Administrative organizations of all Canadian parishes (20-25) across Canada. Must have a degree in Theology, fluency in English, Russian, Old Russian and Old Church Slavonic. Must be proclaimed by Holy Canons of Russian Orthodox Church outside of Russia, must be a Bishop and monk with 20 years of providing religious services and spiritual guidance with the Russian Orthodox Church . The Archbishop will be based at the Protection of the Holy Virgin Memorial Church, Ottawa, ON Canada and will be required to travel to parishes and dioceses across Canada and the USA. Wage $21.50 per hour for full-time (40 hours per week). Benefits: paid travel and accommodation expenses, medical coverage. Send your resume and cover letter to: (contact info deleted)

As you’ve likely guessed by now, I have no monastic experience. None. At all. Fluency in Russian, old Russian and Old Church Slavonic is also nonexistent.

The reason behind publicly posting this at all also escapes me. Was it a joke inspired by recent news events surrounding that church? Was it a real posting designed to avert legal actions by parties as yet unidentified? Your guess is as good as mine.

I await the results of investigations by others better qualified for that work than I am.

And all of a sudden, my Friends and "Friends of Friends" pages are back to the formatting I originally chose for reading them with.

Not sure how or why it happened. Or how long that'll last...

Noticing that this month, my home website on National Capital FreeNet seems...inordinately popular with web surfers in mainland China. Not sure as to why that is.

The nation next in line with the most traceable visits to my NCF home page so far this month is the Russian Federation.

Usually, it's Canada, USA and a random European country in the top three slots.

Strongly inclined to worry over this.
