dewline: Doctor Who quote: Books. Best Weapons in the World (Books)
Yes, the same guy who wrote On Tyranny and The Road to Unfreedom.

This booklet - as near as I can tell - is an argument for taking what the UK's been doing with the NHS and Canada with Medicare and running with it as far and as fast as possible, from the position that such a course would maximise the freedom of most, if not all, citizens.

I hope to have more to say after I finish reading it.

Related note, discovered via Mastodon: Finnish insurance companies seem to have a pattern of making trouble for people dealing with ADHD. I wonder how much along similar lines is happening in Canada. Also, remembering one of the plotlines of Robert J. Sawyer's novel Frameshift...

This is what Labour Day was created to distract us from in Anglophone "North America", right?

As of this year's edition, I'm still looking for steadier work, better work, honest or at least honourable work. My most recent contract was fun, good, mentally healthier, better-paying than I'd had before. Too bad it was only two months.

Pleased to see the tentative agreement between Treasury Board of Canada and four bargaining groups represented by the Public Service Alliance of Canada. Hoping it goes better for the Union of Taxation Employees and soon.

I am going to do the right things as best I can whenever I can, in terms of ecological sustainability. I will fail at this from time to time, being human. I will still do the work to whatever degree I can.

Call me when AOC is president.

Leaving it at that.

Oh, and we need UBI, with disability supports on top of that for those of us needing them. Not clawed back from UBI.

And the ableism in immigration policy at our end has to go away, too.

I got my first bit of specifically anti-trans e-mail this morning. I don't care to know who sent it or whether they actually expect to have changed my mind. It's deleted, and measures are in place to deal with that source of nonsense in future.
dewline: Virus Don't Care (COVID-19)
I am both unsurprised and frightened that this idea might actually be governing the thinking of people in high places right now.

Please note that this essay does contain constructive ideas on how to respond to this danger.

I am not going to play nice with people who think that "Doctor" Jordan Peterson is a sensible human being. That man wants to be the Canadian Goebbels. If you argue for him, we're done with each other. Clear?

Fascists will be blocked here.

If any of you on my friendlist think that a particular person might be salvageable and that I might be able to help with that, message me. Otherwise...they're blocked.

Note to anyone needing to know: fascists includes TERFs.

I don't know who I've lost to violence because of this aspect of their lives. Some of you have lived at risk since long before you and I got to know each other.

I'm trying to be here for if/when you need to talk.

Leaving it at that.
dewline: Text: Searching and Researching (researching)
Yes, we're hitting the eight-billion mark in living humans this week. When I was starting grade school, I think we were at four billion.

Now, though, we have some debate over how difficult things are expected to become, how quickly, and in what ways exactly.

[personal profile] sabotabby and [personal profile] james_davis_nicoll - among others - have already noticed this on their own accounts.

https://www.ola.org/en/legislative-business/bills/parliament-43/session-1/bill-28

Noting this in the opening text of the legislation:

"The Act provides for new collective agreements. The central terms for those collective agreements are set out in the Schedule. The Act requires the termination of any strike or lock-out and prohibits strikes or lock-outs during the term of the collective agreement.

The Act is declared to operate notwithstanding sections 2, 7 and 15 of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms and the Act will apply despite the Human Rights Code.

The Act limits the jurisdiction of the Ontario Labour Relations Board, arbitrators and other tribunals to make certain inquiries or decisions. It also provides for there to be no causes of action or proceedings against the Crown for certain acts. Certain proceedings are deemed to have been dismissed.

The Act provides for regulations, which may be retroactive. Regulations providing for transitional matters will prevail over the Act in the event of a conflict."

This I believe: Doug Ford's crew are actively working to make people die and become disabled. Hence this:

Once again, I didn't go to the parade. Between the Pandemic and family matters, it wasn't going to happen this year either.

However, I'm still of a mind that workers' rights matter. I plan to keep talking and voting accordingly. The next chance that I have to vote in support of such things will conclude on October 24th for the municipal elections across Ontario.

Owing to my travels on foot across various parts of eastern Ottawa today, my feet are particularly achey right now. My own fault, that.
