A couple of things of interest today and tomorrow:

https://affordable-internet.ca/

I think it's clear how these two links dovetail together...?

1. The job search continues. As I type this, I'm looking at Indeed and Jobilico. I expect to check several federal commissions, departments and agencies, a couple of crown corporations, GC Jobs, the federal Job Bank, and at least ten temp placement companies (yet again) over the rest of today.

2. I hope to listen to Ontario Today at noon, because Perseverance on Mars is the topic of the day.

3. Downloading new updates for Affinity Designer, Photo, and Publisher.

4. The Affinity suite is still on sale from Serif.com at half-price as I type this. About C$35 for each of the three programs in the suite.

5. Inkscape and Krita and the like are also still useful freeware, so why not get those too?

6. Listening to The Current right now. The discussion in progress as I type this entry?

Letter-writing. Actual letters through the paper-mail system. Apparently, this is making a come-back among many who have the time and enough other resources.

7. More later today as I think of it.

I have decided to continue to live without green-screening my Zoom sessions.

It's a luxury item to me for the foreseeable future.

I'm looking at op-ed cartoonist Michael de Adder's latest illustration for the Friends of Canadian Broadcasting: Facebook as a Borg "cube" ship, Australia as the TMP version of the Enterprise...and I am starting to wonder if IDW - the current comics license-holders - and CBS Studios ought to get in touch with Mr. de Adder about...whatever he might have a mind to do.

To make it plain:

Hire this guy, people.

Or, at least, to stop buying new books set in that version of our galaxy. I've been reading them since Honor Among Enemies was released in paperback. So...about twenty years now.

Mainly, if it happens, it's going to be due to what I'm reading second-hand of series author David Weber's apparent non-reaction to the Trumpist crowd now apparently dominating the online forum Baen's Bar as administered by Baen Books from several of you. I'm not expecting a happy reaction to whatever Mr. Weber's posted to Facebook about the matter when I see it for myself later tonight.

Which will be cause for some sadness. But it won't be the first time fictional characters proved (mostly) better people than their creator/designer/primary actor on-screen in recent memory. Will it?

More later, I suppose. One way or another.

Anyone on my friendlist heard of something called "WeTransfer"?

One of my relatives swears by it, but I want a wider range of knowledge and opinion on this first.

Okay, it works.

Solution was simple:

Do not use Firefox Home. That feature was taking up too much bandwidth/processor time when I launched Firefox.

Apparently, I'm not alone in having the problem.

Is anyone having issues with version 85?

Like freezing for 10-20 minutes, requiring a "Force Quit" problems?

Writing workshop in progress this afternoon, for practice and for mental health.

Tonight, I get to watch a lecture on architecture organized via Zoom by Carleton University's Azrieli School of Architecture and Urbanism. Been wanting to attend those, but timing pre-Pandemic never seemed to work out. Especially with the distance between Carleton U and Orléans. Zoom lectures are a boon right now!

I've still got some degree of privilege, despite my financial situation this past year. Otherwise, I wouldn't be able to look at those video tutorials. Or, for that matter, read and pass this along:

http://jlord.us/blog/osos-talk.html

Nor would I be able to look at this (and thanks to [personal profile] kiaa for passing it along via [community profile] talkpolitics):

Getting to the point: we still want to leave the Time of Pandemic to enter a newer, better "Normal" than we entered it from. Right?

I started looking at the training videos available via Skillport for that version.

I see from their website that the development teams have already moved onto v. 9 as a stable release, and I suppose I'm going to be playing catch-up for some months if I really want to understand what I can do with this and how to do it...?

Apparently, this is a thing to worry about. Especially with about a third of the planet trying to lurch back towards authoritarianism, fascism, "illiberal democracy", autocracy, etc. at whatever speed they can muster over the objections of the people they assert the right to master.

To some extent, as users of Dreamwidth, we have to subscribe to this POV ourselves or lose some degree of contact with one another. And we definitely consider that international communication and community to be a public good.

How do we deal with this?

This post isn't meant for my regular friendlisters. It's meant for a very particular audience.

I heard about what was done to Ukraine a few years back.

And then Trump.

And now this:

https://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/cse-threat-assesment-1.5806213

If you're involved in this crap and you're reading this and you can understand what I am saying?

Find a way to cut this shit out. I'm a regular Canadian citizen who doesn't need this "Great Game" shit messing up my life or anyone else's for that matter, whether I know who they are or not. I am getting fed up with people who want to go back to the 19th or 18th Centuries, with nukes and bioweapons and cyberwarfare added into the mess.

GoDaddy is "squatting" the *.ca version of their domain name. That IS a problem, right?

I studied several Skillport video tutorials two or three months ago covering Drupal, PHP and SQL as part of an ongoing process of trying to update and expand what I know of web design.

So when I saw these on offer on trashnothing.com, I figured that - outdated as these books may be - this was a chance to further build on whatever I learned from the Skillport videos.
