Edge of Midnight: Base Map Progress V
Nov. 9th, 2023 10:26 pmI got a bit of fannish satisfaction today. This is a thing I've been working on the last few months.

Not done yet, of course.
Good night and good luck.

Mapmaking: Starbase 20?
Oct. 26th, 2023 10:42 pmSo I was looking at maps of the FASA-Trek roleplaying game as well as Memory Beta entries today while I job-searched. Had a thought about where Starbase 20 might be in a map that tries to fit FASA's Triangle region into a largely-Mandel-compliant design...

Edge of Midnight Chapter 14
Oct. 9th, 2023 10:23 pmThe fan fiction project by John Concagh that I've been working on that map for just uploaded a new chapter tonight.

Day of Rest
Sep. 17th, 2023 09:31 pmOf course, I haven't really rested today. The following things got done today:
- vacuumed two floors of the house
- picked out stars to host a half-dozen or so planets on that Edge of Midnight map project
- did two walking/shopping trips mainly for exercise
- practiced a bit more for Clip Studio Paint via the Cintiq tablet/monitor
- uploaded a scan of a sketch I drew for my Amateur Press Alliance back in 2006 to various social media outlets for the sake of self-promotion and because of Batman Day
- cleaned up some of my kitchen mess
- applied for another job
- cleaned my CPAP gear, as I need to do each weekend
- wrote a note of comment to the Ottawa Board of Health about protection measures against SARS-CoV-2 and other contagions of note and worry
I'd like to get a new "office/studio" chair, but barring some surprise via trashnothing.com, that's probably not going to happen soon. The one I use currently leans a bit to my right because of years of my leaning to that side when I sit down in it. Also, it deflates an inch after a certain amount of time sitting down.

Animation Festivals and Star Maps
Sep. 14th, 2023 09:43 pmYes, there still is such an event. The Pandemic hasn't killed it. I hope everyone who goes, is careful and has fun. In that order, please?

Meanwhile, I'm trying to figure out an alternative to epsilon Eridani for Axanar's host star. This leaves me with a history question: how much of the local galactic region was already charted out by the Vulcans before first contact with Earth?
I don't think they knew about Axanar - the planet or the species - going by "ENT: Fight or Flight". So, while the first contact between Earth and Axanar may well have happened at epsilon Eridani, I don't think that species' homeworld should be there as well.

The Demon-Haunted Panel of 2023
Sep. 1st, 2023 10:53 amOkay, I'm back.
Hosted by the Roddenberry people - yes, that Roddenberry family! - and they apologize up-front for the sound quality as it was recorded at Star Trek Las Vegas 2023. The panel title was inspired, of course, by Carl Sagan...

I hope everyone involved got home safe from Las Vegas. Of course, I remain convinced that the Pandemic in Progress is not yet done with us. We need to do more work on multiple fronts, including resuming masking-up properly.

It's fun, digging through HYGMap, SIMBAD, Memory Alpha, Memory Beta, and a few other sites as well for this stuff.

Trek: No More For Bell Media?
Aug. 1st, 2023 11:06 amThis is it, apparently. Paramount is done with Bell Media.

I've been reminded of this notice from about a month ago:

Not sure what to make of it all.

Yes, this is for the Edge of Darkness project.
Right now, I'm re-reading Star Charts and Stellar Cartography
1. GJ 3414
2. HD 10226
The latter is 150+ ly below "galactic equatorial". The former is 21 ly above it.
Other considerations for my choice?
Needs to be close to the core systems because of events in the DS9 episode "In the Pale Moonlight" where Betazed is taken by Dominion forces. Quoting Memory Alpha: "With Betazed captured, other nearby worlds, including Vulcan, Tellar, Alpha Centauri, and Andor, were at risk of Dominion attack."
(If you've got those systems within striking distance, Sol's in range, too, right?)
Also, it needs to be on the "roads" between those systems and Bajor/Cardassia's neighbourhood, which is roughly 100 ly above "galactic equatorial". If you look up from Earth towards the Ursa Major-Draco constellation border with a strong enough telescope, you should see the alleged home stars of those planets.

Maps: Edge of Midnight Base Map Progress
Jul. 30th, 2023 08:59 amOkay, so I've been having fun reading this serialised Star Trek-linked fan-fiction dressed up as a history book called Edge of Midnight by John Concagh AKA "Seamus Devenish". So much so that I've started working on a "base map" to show his version of the affected regions of the Federation-Klingon border.
If you're interested in keeping an eye on my progress and you're not already on the relevant Discord or Facebook pages, I've got a thread running over at the Affinity forums, since Affinity Designer is what I'm using for this project.
