Due South Anniversaries

RIP: Gordon Pinsent
Feb. 25th, 2023 10:51 pmSo it's finally happened.
I was kind of hoping he'd live just long enough to be in an Alpha Flight movie. I don't know which character would have been a good fit, mind you...
And for the record, I did get to meet him once, at the Magnetic North festival. I thanked him for Bob Fraser (Due South) and Duff McArdle (Power Play).

The "hamlet" - I'm having trouble thinking of a community of a thousand people as a "hamlet", as it seems more a small town - is a trivia point in the back story of Due South's central character Benton Fraser, being one of the communities in which his parents and grandparents jointly raised him. It's also a very real place, the most northern community in Canada that you can reach by road these days.
"Tuk", as it's known to many of its local people, is also one of many places across the planet now imperilled by climate derangement.

DUE SOUTH/FANDOM: Passing the Word
Jan. 8th, 2020 01:14 pmSo, there's a new community being organized.

I'm not much into fanfic in general these days, but I know that some of you are. Some of you, specifically into Due South. So if this is of help to you...?

Due South Creator vs. MeToo
Dec. 28th, 2019 12:22 amThe fact that it's Due South fandom's moment of trauma and truth - a fandom I am part of - is a sidebar in this, I expect. But because he created that TV series that made such a splash in Canada before going on to bigger things...
As we're seeing with Harry Potter's creator for other reasons, the creations are often going to prove better than their creators.

I think this was about as bleak an episode as it ever got after "Victoria's Secret"...and while it got weirder after that, it never got as bleak again.
Also...they never did follow up with the Vecchio/Zuko feud after that, did they? I expect there's fan fiction aplenty amongs the Duesers, but no follow-up episode was ever made.

Weird TV/Film Industry Synchronicities
Jun. 12th, 2014 06:01 pmJust noticed that it's been 20 years since Paul Gross and Mark Ruffalo worked together on the Due South episode "A Cop, A Mountie and a Baby".
Yes, that Mark Ruffalo.
And now there's reports of Marvel Studios maybe - maybe! - considering an Alpha Flight movie based on trademark filings from back in December 2013...and I'm getting weird vibes stumbling across the reminder of this historical fact from 1994.
It almost certainly amounts to bupkis in terms of any plans on Marvel's part. I'm likely doing what nerds often do: seeing patterns by accident.
But entertaining patterns, right?

...or maybe for one of Sara Paretsky's V.I. Warshawski tales (if Mme. Paretsky hasn't already made use of it and I've simply forgotten...)?
Tunnels of downtown Chicago, anyone?

For the Due South fans:
Jul. 16th, 2011 10:25 pmRCW-139 is on again for 2012!
Would love to attend - finally! - that particular show, but will have to wait and see what can be done...
Still, after today's CFL debacle involving the Saskatchewan Roughriders and all the travelling today, it's a good note to call it a night on.

For those concerned about the rising costs of post-secondary education:

Michael Geist on the latest in student fees re: copyright. This is the issue that made me wish that (a) Hayden Trenholm had been on the same side of the panel table as Marie Bilodeau and myself last month, regardless of my disagreement with him on this point, and that (b) Professor Geist had been able to attend Can-Con so as to sit on that same panel. We would have indeed gotten an informed debate on the subject.
How the heck does an internet access co-op based in Canada, operated by and for Canadians, get told they're not Canadian enough by the CRTC? Explanations courtesy of Iain Marlow of the Globe and Mail:

Does this mean that OG-Wifi and National Capital FreeNet would hit the same wall?

For the Due South fans among us
Jun. 10th, 2010 02:44 pmA minor bit of news:
One on my friendlist is already committed to attending RCW 139, the fan-run convention for other fen of that late, beloved Canadian cop/drama/comedy TV mixture about a Mountie from the Territories transplanted into the inner precincts of then-modern Chicago of the 1990's. I'd like to go, I've been offered a round-trip ride between Ottawa and Toronto, but I don't know that I can swing the expense. (Sure, I've got a PayPal account linked to my GMail address that people can send gifts/donations/sketch commissions to if they're so inclined, but I'm not sure I want to put it to that kind of usage. Seems...wrong somehow for this sort of want, as opposed to a genuine need.)
If you'll pay attention to the rows on the guest list table highlighted in green, I think you'll understand some of the reasons why I'd like to go.

We Lost Paul Quarrington
Jan. 21st, 2010 11:08 amSome of you remember him for his novels. Some for his TV work, particularly Due South and Power Play scripts. And as the CBC obituary notes, there's a tonne of other stuff he had a hand in over the years.
I met him briefly once or twice in the course of my volunteer duties with the Ottawa International Writers Festival. I can at least say that I was able to thank him for the work that I saw on the TV screen. For that, I'm glad. I'm sorry that we won't be seeing anything more from his keyboard, or hearing his singing voice in anything not already pre-recorded. He was a joy to watch and learn from in person.
I'm sorry for the pain his closer friends and family must now be dealing with.
Thanks again, Paul. For everything.

...or maybe not. I just spotted something on Usenet's alt.tv.due-south newsgroup that led me to this web page, proposing a revival of the RCW 139 conventions. Just thought some of you might be interested.
Notes to End Victoria Day On
May. 21st, 2007 10:00 pmA few things of minor interest:
- Mildly boggled by the idea of a quarter to honour the next Fantastic Four movie. What the devil's going on with that‽
- Found out about a revival campaign site for Due South. Somehow this pleases me, although I have to wonder at the odds of success.
- More on other stuff later.
I wish it were a snow day. But then I wouldn't have earned my day's wages...but enough of that.

In this case, the other culture is British.
I am amused and pleased to note that Cst. Benton Fraser and James Bond AKA "007" now have something in common: Paul Haggis, creator of Due South.
This next film iteration of Casino Royale may be the first 007 movie I go see on the strength of the scriptwriter alone, never mind the acting talent.
