Specifically, the reading list recommended to him by his supervising officer per last week's episode. He told Skye that he was reading "one of about a hundred" such books as part of his ongoing training process.

Which makes sense. Intelligence/law-enforcement officers should be expected to undertake a certain amount of this stuff.

I wonder what titles are on that list given to Agent Ward.

Any suggestions? Some will likely be specific to the Marvel Cinema'Verse, but others might have analogues in the real world's bookstores.

About this week's installment, I had a couple of thoughts:

Spoiler-ish questions and notes )

Have there been such things?

There is an obscure discussion going on that needs an answer to this question.

Wondering what Amtrak would name a direct route between Gotham City and Chicago. They name all the other train routes they operate, after all. Some names inherited from pre-Amtrak operators of the routes in question, of course...

Opinions are welcome.

...without getting into spoiler details here, I get the sense that the Doctor's seen this sort of issue crop up before. And it ended very badly that time.

Would I be wrong?

Three or four years back, I commented on Mark Waid's approach to Metropolis c. 3005 or so in his version of LSH. This, before I knew that it was going to become the Metropolis of 31st Century Earth-Prime per Final Crisis: Legion of Three Worlds.

Looking back at that discussion, some of you in the audience took that earlier bait and went off in several interesting directions with it. Took me with you, in fact.

[livejournal.com profile] itsokimasenator inspired me to go back to that earlier posting with today's commentary on LSH v.4 # 29. Got me thinking again about what that version of the planet looked like back then before all the chambers went BOOM.

I still feel that the aforementioned Lo3W mini-series is wider-ranging in its implications of which toys are available for play again than some might believe. Hoping I'm right about that.

Okay...I'm a sucker for quasi-military defence/intelligence services in comic books. Especially the ones allied with the UN. You knew that from my chatter on SHIELD - which may be coming back at Marvel sooner than I thought - already, as well as my following Checkmate in both of its published-so-far incarnations. Really enjoyed it when [livejournal.com profile] ruckawriter was handling it with his artistic partners as well as Eric "MercuryEric" Trautmann.

So, something happened in Wonder Woman got my attention recently.

If you already read the book or you're willing to risk spoilerage...? )

You may recall that since Secret Invasion, the Marvel-616 version of the USA has been going it alone, forcing the breakup of SHIELD and creating its own wholly-owned version of that venerable cloak-and-laser outfit called HAMMER, led by Norman "Uniroyal Head" Osborn. Up to now, Marvel's had no answer to the question of "what does the HAMMER acronym stand for?"

I may have an answer, recently cobbled together by imagination...

Homeland Agency for Metahuman Management and Emergency Response

Marvel is, of course, free to use or ignore this as they wish. HAMMER's their trademark, after all, as SHIELD also is.

What do you think, though? While we're waiting for their press release...?

As an amusement using Google Maps:

Per Faces of Evil: Solomon Grundy # 1. Excluding what I call the Busiek Planetary Inflation Factor, here's how you might make the trip, making certain assumptions about which city is located where.

The latest version of Legion of Super-Heroes mentioned something interesting in passing in a recent issue written by Mark Waid: their version of 31st Century Metropolis runs across nearly the entire North American Atlantic seaboard.

Question: how chilling(or not) do you find the implications of a single city running all the way from Cape Breton to Key West?

Yours, whilst still wishing I'd gotten that Daily Planet Guide to the Legion Worlds project with West End Games past the outline stage,

I'm thinking that we need to put a seminar for comics writers, editors, artists, etc. together. It ought to deal with nothing but space science-related issues. C-ACE could host it next year, here in Ottawa. I'd attend, just for a refresher.

Example of the sort of thing that's got me thinking of the need for such a gathering? Lately in the DCU titles, in the wake of the chaos of the Infinite Crisis, we've had Polaris referred to as a "galaxy" rather than a star system.

I don't know. Maybe it sounds cooler these days to refer to galaxies rather than individual star systems within any one galaxy. Maybe, there's a sound-alike in certain other DCU-specific cultures' languages for "Polaris", as was established for there being more than one "Rigel" in Star Trek's specific ficton back when Enterprise started up. If so, say so, and I, continuity-attentive soul that I am, will likely move on happily. Certainly, it would explain away the discrepancy between the DCU's Polaris -- which has at least one habitable world orbiting it with its own star nation, the Thanagarian nation, keeping its capital there -- and the real Polaris, which given its status as a supergiant, might be somewhat less than likely to be hosting life similar to what we know to be possible.

Anyway...I could probably recommend a few books and websites for the course curriculum. The partial list will likely appear in a future posting...
