2020 Edition

I'm Dwight Williams. That's the name my parents gave me, and I continue to hold onto it for lack of anything better to choose to adopt.

I've been an office worker, an artist (comic books, courtroom art, and op-ed cartoons) and a writer. I am a member of the precariate, seeing as my work situation is always uncertain from month to month. Somehow, I still manage to be able to afford this Dreamwidth account for now.

You could call me "cis-het-male", "settler-descended", "white", "Euro-Canadian"...but I am not interested in restricting my friendships and other relationships to those circles. I can't afford that habit to begin with, and it's damned boring besides. To those of you, whether you're inside or outside such circles, who call me friend here and elsewhere: I thank you. You are doing me a kindness for any number of reasons of your own, and it's appreciated.

I live in a place with at least two identities: Ottawa, Ontario, Canada...and also the unceded traditional territory of the Omàmiwininiwak (or as non-Indigenous Canadians were taught, the Algonquin people). Neither of these identities are wrong to me.

I'm a fan of super-heroes, space opera, crime drama, mysteries, science fiction in general...and I read a lot of other stuff besides.

This is not all of who and what I understand myself to be. And much of it is subject to change.

Thank you for visiting and chatting on whatever basis you're comfortable with.

My parents thought that they gave me a name that stands out.

I've been mistaken for two other authors, a mercenary in Florida (or at least they were in Florida when I was mistaken for them), someone else in Ohio who seems to do a lot of business with one of Home Depot's stores there, and there's assorted other doctors, engineers, football players, ex-inmates of a couple of prison systems, etc. out there with the same first name-last name combination. And someone ranting on CBC's web news pages, also with the same first name-last name combo.

I suppose I should stay used to the confusion?

[personal profile] jecoleuk - hoping I've attributed properly here - posted links to other people's portfolios on their FB account that have got me practicing anatomical detail work. Eyes, facial structure, ear structure, arm structure...that kind of thing. I doubt that I'll be uploading any of my own "practice-by-eyeball-copying" to Flickr, but I need the practice. To get back into practice, if I want to do any more comics illustration of any sort ever again. Paid or not.

Oh, and the sketchbook I'm using right now? It's one of those little 5.5" x 8" Strathmore "Visual Journals". I have no idea if the company makes them anymore. Not right now. I'll look into it after I've exhausted this one, though.

I've read some of the news and opinions about how the place is being taken apart by Verizon via their Oath subsidiary. This is cause for no small degree of distress, and I share in that.

I think you'll find Dreamwidth a congenial place to hang out via the Internet. Here's the official welcome from the Dreamwidth management.

For myself: I have been a writer, an illustrator, an office worker and a software tester. I expect to fill other roles as well between now and my eventual death. Some of which I expect to discuss here. As noted on my profile page, I was once a LiveJournal user, but when their server farm finally got moved to Moskva and the management made it clear I was expected to conduct myself on LJ as if I lived in Putinist Russia...well, that was it.

I hope some of you looking at this weblog for the first time will find me a congenial online neighbour.

More later, here and elsewhere...

There are people I need to converse with more often. Instant-Messenger-style services seem to be falling away, and maybe I should go back to e-mailing them/you?

Because with the latest from the Cambridge Analytica mess underway, who knows, right?

Some people might remember my name from Facebook and wonder who the heck this guy is that's been typing out...something that maybe is sometimes sensible and on other occasions makes you want to perforate their skull with your fist.

I'm Dwight. I'm a Canadian nerd. Sometimes, I've been a writer. Others, an artist, still other times, an office worker. I don't plan to discuss that last part of my work history much. It's not secret, just not what I want to talk about here.

I started this out on Livejournal years and years ago. I thought then that I was going to promote myself as a writer and illustrator. Some of my friendlist here knows me from at least that far back. I left because Livejournal was expected to expect me to write this here blog as if I were living and working in Putin's version of Russia. Because their servers had been moved there.

I was born in what some call Treaty 4 territory out on the prairies of North America/Turtle Island to Euro-Canadian parents. I live in Ottawa-Gatineau, built on what's still unceded Alqonquin territory.

So that's the short version.

People who live in or declare allegiance to what I call Canada are a mixture of people who come from all sorts of different places, different ways of thinking. From people who insist they're not Canadian because their allegiance is to a nation that pre-dates European contact to people who see themselves as Canadian no matter where else on Earth they may live and work...this was a collection of stories that filled me with joy, sadness, fear, hope...and wonder above all else.

If you grow up in a civil service family, everything to do with government comes back to your sense of identity sooner or later. Like it or not, want it or not. You are raised and trained in those terms. Your parents may not even realize it.

"I can see my lifetime piling up", by Melissa Mesku.

I don't rent a storage unit. Thankfully, for reasons that discussing would require an invasion of others' privacy, I haven't had to cross that river yet. But someday, I'll have to. And questions I don't want to hear or ask will crop up again.

I have an excuse for the accumulation, several excuses in fact. You've all read about several of them over the years. But I wonder how well they really hold up from time to time, and more often as I keep aging.

Okay, for some of you just getting used to my meanderings here, there's some explanation possibly needed. Regulars can and should feel free to skip this post.

With that out of the way... )

With apologies one more time to Matt Dusk. That song's a good one.

Seeing as we've got a few new faces here on the friendlist since January 2011...

It will be revised on occasion as the years go by.
