2023 Edition

With apologies to Matt Dusk.

A lot of you have been here with me a while, so you can skip this one, as it's for the newer arrivals. It's been three years since the last edition, so it's overdue.

I'm Dwight Williams. That's the name my parents gave me, and I continue to hold onto it for lack of anything better to choose to adopt.

I've been an office worker, an artist (comic books, courtroom art, and op-ed cartoons) and a writer. I am a member of the precariate, seeing as my work situation is always uncertain from month to month. Somehow, I still manage to be able to afford this Dreamwidth account for now.

You could call me "cis-het-male", "settler-descended", "white", "Euro-Canadian"...and I am not interested in restricting my friendships and other relationships to those circles. I can't afford that habit to begin with, and it's damned boring besides. To those of you, whether you're inside or outside such circles, who call me friend here and elsewhere: I thank you. You are doing me a kindness for any number of reasons of your own, and it's appreciated.

I live in a place with at least two identities: Ottawa, Ontario, Canada...and also the unceded traditional territory of the Omàmiwininiwak (or as non-Indigenous Canadians were taught, the Algonquin people). Neither of these identities are wrong to me.

I'm a fan of super-heroes, space opera, crime drama, mysteries, science fiction in general...and I read a lot of other stuff besides.

This is not all of who and what I understand myself to be. And much of it is subject to change.

Thank you for visiting and chatting on whatever basis you're comfortable with.

...two of them so far today. Care to introduce yourselves?

I've read some of the news and opinions about how the place is being taken apart by Verizon via their Oath subsidiary. This is cause for no small degree of distress, and I share in that.

I think you'll find Dreamwidth a congenial place to hang out via the Internet. Here's the official welcome from the Dreamwidth management.

For myself: I have been a writer, an illustrator, an office worker and a software tester. I expect to fill other roles as well between now and my eventual death. Some of which I expect to discuss here. As noted on my profile page, I was once a LiveJournal user, but when their server farm finally got moved to Moskva and the management made it clear I was expected to conduct myself on LJ as if I lived in Putinist Russia...well, that was it.

I hope some of you looking at this weblog for the first time will find me a congenial online neighbour.

More later, here and elsewhere...

Because with the latest from the Cambridge Analytica mess underway, who knows, right?

Some people might remember my name from Facebook and wonder who the heck this guy is that's been typing out...something that maybe is sometimes sensible and on other occasions makes you want to perforate their skull with your fist.

I'm Dwight. I'm a Canadian nerd. Sometimes, I've been a writer. Others, an artist, still other times, an office worker. I don't plan to discuss that last part of my work history much. It's not secret, just not what I want to talk about here.

I started this out on Livejournal years and years ago. I thought then that I was going to promote myself as a writer and illustrator. Some of my friendlist here knows me from at least that far back. I left because Livejournal was expected to expect me to write this here blog as if I were living and working in Putin's version of Russia. Because their servers had been moved there.

I was born in what some call Treaty 4 territory out on the prairies of North America/Turtle Island to Euro-Canadian parents. I live in Ottawa-Gatineau, built on what's still unceded Alqonquin territory.

So that's the short version.

Most of you reading this already know me.

For those of you seeing this for the first time: I'm Dwight Williams. I've been a writer, an artist, an office-worker. My closest approach to Real Fame was co-writing the Daily Planet Guide to Gotham City with Newsarama co-founder (and current lead writer at The Science Of) Matt Brady. It was a fun gig.

I'm also an irregular contributor to the Spacing Ottawa weblog on local urban infrastructure, history and culture. I've done courtroom art, op-ed cartoons and the occasional comic book over the years as well.

I'm interested in a lot of subjects, so expect a lot of wandering in my writings here. As I hope to see from you in turn.

More as it occurs to any of us...

Okay, for some of you just getting used to my meanderings here, there's some explanation possibly needed. Regulars can and should feel free to skip this post.

Self-Portrait- 1 January 2011 With apologies to Matt Dusk.

Seeing as we've got a few new faces here on the friendlist since April of '10 and given that we've just started a new (Gregorian) year...let's get reacquainted!

I'm Dwight Williams, a Storyteller in Words and Pictures with some of the arrogance that goes with that. I don't know where the rest of the arrogance I'm supposed to have is, but it seems to have been misplaced somehow en route to my door.

Currently, there's a couple of Big Projects on my plate. The one I've mentioned previously, drawing the artwork for the first issue of Local Hero is on temporary hold. My partner on this series of mini-series -- thus have we planned things out -- is one Ian Gould.

The other is...well, it's space opera. More than that, I'll share as things develop further.

Recently, a book called Kagemono: Flowers and Skulls came out. This book has a story, "Written in the Stars", written by [livejournal.com profile] jasonfranks  and illustrated by my hand, mouse, and tablet. You can currently get it via Amazon.com or directly from the publisher.

Other, smaller projects are on various burners and hopefully something will come of them all in due course.

My main website, detailing my history in the field of writing and illustration to date, some of my favourite places, devices for the work, likes and dislikes in the worlds of entertainment and so on, is here.

You're looking at my Livejournal right now, of course. And running parallel to this blog is my ArtBlog. The ArtBlog is where I'll occasionally post artwork from behind the scenes of whatever project is currently my main focus, as well as the occasional random sketch(line art or CGI) or photo, just because I feel like it that day.

As of today, I still live in the city of Ottawa, national capital of Canada. I'm usually pleased about this fact for reasons I occasionally discuss at some length from time to time here...and elsewhere. I contribute on occasion to other blogs, including the original publicbroadcasting.ca blog, still active as such...and spacingottawa.ca, a blog devoted to urban infrastructure issues here in Ottawa-Gatineau, linked up with Spacing Magazine.

If you want to reach me via e-mail, check my profile page. There should be at least one e-mail address there, or if not, then the homepage referred to above should provide for e-mail contact info. I'll be particularly interested if anyone wants me for commission work, but if you've got a subject that catches my eye, I won't ignore you right off the bat.

Looking forward to the year ahead...and over to you!

Seeing as we've got a few new faces here on the friendlist...let's update!

Wondering if it isn't time for another one of these...

With apologies to Matt Dusk

I'm Dwight Williams, Storyteller in Words and Pictures. Currently, my Big Project is drawing the artwork for the second issue of Local Hero. My partner on this series of mini-series -- thus have we planned things out -- is one Ian Gould.

My main website, detailing my history in the field of writing and illustration to date, some of my favourite places, devices for the work, likes and dislikes in the worlds of entertainment and so on, is here.

I've got online presence in other places across the net, including galleries of one sort or another at Picasa, Flickr, Comicspace, NING, and Facebook.

I live in the city of Ottawa, national capital of Canada. I'm usually pleased about this fact for reasons I may discuss at irregular intervals, quite possibly at great length.

And back to you...
dewline: Text - "On the DEWLine" (Default)
Every so often, it's a good idea to take stock and reintroduce myself to the virtual world. Many of you have already seen earlier versions of this post, but that's alright...

I'm Dwight Williams. I call myself a "storyteller" in the same sense as other "full-service" writer/artist comics people have done over the years, because I've written and drawn professionally for a number of outfits on several different types of projects. I hope to continue to do so until the day I die and that such a final day will be a long ways off in my future, may it please Whomever governs such matters.

In addition to this weblog at Livejournal, which will be hitting its second anniversary this October, I maintain a presence elsewhere on the Web, including some of the following places:

My home page at the National Capital Freenet, based in Ottawa, Canada.

An online webgallery at Yahoo's GeoCities' service.

The DEWLiner's Artblog, which serves as an ongoing adjunct to that online Gallery.

An outpost at Comicspace.

And newly added, a presence at the Engine's ning.com community.

And this blog?

Mostly, it's to talk about whatever comes to mind, and to let you all know what's up from my studio in a basement hidden in the wilds of east Ottawa...

To those of you already here, thanks for sticking around. To those of you just dropping in?

Stick around. Things are starting to get interesting again...
