Dealt with job search stuff today. At least five of the companies I'm registered with haven't forgotten me, thankfully. We'll see what comes of that.

Clearing out the Dreamwidth Inbox of clutter.

Uploaded some pix to my Flickr account because photography hobby and personal amusement and a fitness goal achieved.

One short, sharp screaming jag this afternoon because of the Diamond/comic book/finances in general thing.

I got some actual sketchbook practice in today.

From the Guardian: Mark Ruffalo - yes, the actor - on his visit to Standing Rock, ND. Interesting sidebar he mentions in passing: there's a Navajo-based company making solar panels.

Same newspaper: Apparently, there's a fight going on within the FBI over the 2016 USA presidential election at the moment.

On surveillance in Canada: Montréal police vs. journalists on the one hand (with commentary on the matter coming from, among others, Edward Snowden via videolink to McGill University), and CSIS accumulating metadata on a second hand. We'll assume there's additional arms waiting to be revealed, although I don't expect a reveal of HYDRA-style plotters behind any of our scenes. If anyone in Ottawa raises anything akin to the Skull and Tentacles on a flagpole anywhere near Parliament Hill, that will be a real shock. (Also, Disney will unleash something more fearsome than any army upon the perpetrators: intellectual property lawyers. And that will be the end of that scheme.)

Speaking of actors again: Emma Watson and a bunch of accomplices are trying to get conversations about literature going via the London Underground. I think we have enough notable authors scattered across Ottawa-Gatineau and beyond in both official languages and a couple of indigenous languages as well to get something similar going as well once the expansion of the O-Train network is truly underway. Mark Bourrie, the Ladies' Killing Circle, Jay Odjick, Marie Bilodeau, S.M. Carriere, Alex Binkley  and I expect there are others I'm forgetting (but not [personal profile] ed_rex!)...and as for actors? We're growing that community, too.

On street names: Remember Ottawa's Central Park district near the Experimental Farm, with streets named in a New York theme? As a comics fan, I was tickled to see one of those side streets named for Gotham, but the people who live on Trump Avenue are getting annoyed at the heightened notoriety. The people running Ashcroft Development and Ottawa City Hall at the time the development was first approved might have some belated second thoughts about the naming, no? "Hillary" as an alternative, however, is already taken by a street in the Guildwood Estates area.

Update 5 Nov. 2022: Well, that remark about the Skull-and-Tentacles flag of HYDRA aged really well in the past half-decade and change since then, didn't it?

I've managed to walk to the local grocery and the library branch across the parking lot from it and back home again without landing on my skull thanks to any patches of ice.

This is a very good thing.

I made progress on drawing gifts for assorted friends and relatives today as well. Also good.

Cyclops-002A

I hope for more good things tomorrow.

The Pen and Paper workshop crew had their Christmas/Chanukah party at the Foolish Chicken restaurant last night. Which was fun. [livejournal.com profile] themoo37 was back in town for the festivities, as were eight others, some regular attendees and others not so much.

This morning, I'm feeling not quite all here. There's cotton in the brain, and I can't seem to focus on any single thing for more than a few minutes. Not sure if it's a milder form of clinical depression or if it's just life in the internet era, but either way, I don't much like it.

I'll be going downtown shortly to meet with friends and watch the closing installments of Battlestar Galactica: Blood and Chrome. Not much has been happening on the Galactica herself in this particular serial, but it's been a fun ride checking out the new revelations about William Adama when he was fresh out of the Colonial Forces Academy via YouTube.

I'll check back with you downtown.

Waking up this morning, the first impression I got from looking in the mirror?

I thought of one of the Bird brothers, the villains of The Secret of the Unicorn, from the Tintin series.

Weird, to resemble a Hergé character, particularly that one. All I'd have needed would be to lose the moustache.

Moving on to other topics...

Today, I start with a couple of thoughts.

One: Vacuuming needs be done this morning.

Two: Railfest 33 over at Algonquin College sounds interesting. Hoping to attend at least part of the fun there today.

Three: Angela Merkel is Wrong.

More thoughts on other topics later...

Been dealing with this recurring pain on the right side of the neck for a few days now. Not sure where in which Afterlife it came from, but I know where I'd like for it to be disappeared to. Seems as if the two Aspirin® I took have taken care of the worst of it for now.

Better news: I'm finally going to see what a meeting at the Bytown Railway Society looks like. Since several of their number helped me with key research on the "Alphabet Village" article for Spacing Ottawa, it's since seemed a Good Idea to thank them personally for that help. The information was indeed helpful and pointed me at facts I wouldn't have known of otherwise...never mind sharing it with anyone else.

So if you're a BRS member and you weren't able to make it tonight...thanks for helping to keep that organization up and running. You helped me help other people.

Got some house chores done this morning and evening. In between, I went to the ByMUG meeting this afternoon and learned stuff about Snow Leopard, and other software of interest. Tonight I got some illustration practice with an old creation in.

Productive day.

Today was...okay.

I did a bit of travelling, some minor shopping, some web-surfing for the day-job hunt, some photography for the reference files, got interviewed for a survey on the attractions of Confederation Boulevard over by the Terry Fox Monument, and helped a friend-lister out with a problem of theirs via wifi while I was indulging at one of the tea/coffee houses.

Also some minor page layout. Almost done with # 2, which will be good.

All in all, a good day. Not spectacular, but not bad.

Another of those catch-all entries.

1. To [livejournal.com profile] budgie_uk: Hoping your big day's a good one! My best to the rest of the immediate, and good to see you surviving another one!

2. On the other side of the ledger, I've seen notices from Val d'Orazio, [livejournal.com profile] steverolston and others about the death of CyberSix co-creator Carlos Meglia. A damn shame.

3. As sad as that is, [livejournal.com profile] bob_greenberger has lost his son Robbie a day or two ago. At age twenty.

4. I honestly don't know which of the two sets of circumstances is truly worse, and trying is going to simply drive me certifiable. Both ought to have been with us longer than they were. And on a purely selfish note, I never got to meet either in person.

5. Ladies, gents, respected others: thank you for your company so far. My apologies for the slights I've committed against you so far.

Well, it's a mixed kind of day.

Got some random sketching practice in today while I waited for assorted scans for Local Hero to process through first the scanner and then Photopaint. And then a bit of page renovation afterwards: drawing one panel to replace what had once been two. One more page just about done, in other words.

(Resulting note to self: new(er), faster computer is now on the Winter Holiday Want List.)

You've already seen my reaction to the news from Canaveral today. At least, almost everyone's breathing a sigh of relief -- myself included -- over Ernesto's future.

As for my TV fandom role, I got a bit of vindication mixed with reminders of old pain regarding This is Wonderland today as well. Maybe something good can come out of the nomination alone? I hope so.

More as I think of it...

I expect things on the illustration side to pick up steam over the next couple of weeks. To put it diplomatically: progress is being made. More on that anon.

I might make more of it were it not for this blasted heat-wave running through the Ottawa Valley, even after a full-blown thunderstorm system last night. Wind, rain, lightning, the works. I was woken quite emphatically at about midnight. The light show was...memorable.

No comments on politics tonight. Mainly because I can't form a coherent thought long enough to get it written.

Maybe tomorrow. There's certainly more than enough ground to cover...
