It seems to me today as if everyone from select families of our dead soldiers to Lewis McKenzie and assorted others on the Current to Rosie Di Manno of the Toronto Star is in the process of ripping our current Prime Minister and Defence Minister a new one since the media ban fell upon the repatriation ceremonies at CFB Trenton yesterday.

I acknowledge that the choice of whether or not such ceremonies should be open to the news services is one that should lie solely with the families of the dead, if not already dictated by the stated wishes of the Canadian Forces personnel under discussion(should they have managed to correctly anticipate the manner of their return from the operational theatre).

I also acknowledge that many serving members are of divided opinion on the subject.

I still believe that, should either of the first two conditions of consent I mention in my acknowledgements be met, the news media -- by whatever arrangement is considered mutually suitable, perhaps the pool feed system proposed on the Current and elsewhere, should be permitted some degree of access to future repatriation services at Canadian Forces Bases.

Otherwise, this ban remains a blot on our national record.

We should not look away when the honoured dead pass by. No matter what Harper and O'Connor claim or believe to be true.

And if, as Rosie di Manno fears, they're truly even thinking of muzzling the embedded reporters...the gloves ought to come off.

We don't need to hide from any truth about Afghanistan.
