He was the best person who could conceivably be pope but... That's still quite a constraint.

That job in particular has restraints that have been tacked onto it over a millennium, at least, yes! Hoping that he's moved the needle for the better...

Catholic doctrine is what it is, but what the Pope chooses to emphasize matters & it was good that Francis emphasized the preferential option for the poor and vulnerable.
