I was going to do some self-promotional blogging again shortly.
I've just been convinced to change my mind, having had a look at something a few minutes ago that a number of you may have already read about via other sources. I found out via
warren_ellis's Engine message boards.

You will want to look at the New Scientist article linked therein, assuming you can make it past the formatting issues on the above-mentioned page. You'll want to do some further digging on your own, and I suggest you do so before taking me seriously on that.
Maybe there are other avenues of research being chased down right now that are equally promising, if not more so. I suspect that there are. There was that tailored-virus project here in Ottawa that's also starting to get headlines again in Canadian newspapers.
But this development is still damn close to a miracle, if the research pans out as I hope it might. If there's a reasonably safe yet quicker way to get this research done, I think it should be done.
This stupid batch of diseases cost me my Dad and others in my family have either died or endured near-misses themselves over the decades. I want to see at least this one thing wiped out in my lifetime.
I'll be keeping my eyes peeled, and e-mailing my MP to see what more can be done. Since the research is happening in the New Conservatives' political backyard of Alberta, that may be more than usual.
Stay tuned. And let me know what you think and whatever else you hear.
Back to crass self-promotional postings later.

Date: 2007-01-27 11:51 pm (UTC)I took the step of reprinting the complete online New Scientist article in my posting (for reasons I state in my piece) including the link to the University of Alberta. As I note in the section I wrote above it if one goes to the U of A site there's a spot to submit one's email so as to receive updates.

Date: 2007-01-28 02:12 am (UTC)In service of spreading the word as far and wide as possible, I'll put it here as well:
U of Alberta's DCA Research Page (http://www.depmed.ualberta.ca/dca/)
Let's see if we can keep this ball rolling, and what comes of it. As you say, if it doesn't pan out, we shouldn't be that much worse off than we already are.
