Accidental Cruelties to Wildlife

I just gave myself a shock.

There was a chipmunk in the back yard this morning. I thought it dead, and so went to dig a hole in one of the flower beds to give it a burial. As I started piling on the topsoil, I got that self-inflicted shock: the chipmunk woke up and started scurrying again.

Never assume death, unless it's clearly obvious. And it wasn't obvious here.

And now, I've really buried a truly dead chipmunk.

I hope it wasn't the one I woke up by trying to bury earlier, but I fear that's a bit too much luck to ask for from the universe.
