We have years when the number of rabbits dotting sidewalk swards and apartment lawns during dusk hours can be in the double digits in one block. Some years we have a ton of skunks. In my old neighborhood, we also had raccoons; there and in the neighborhood we lived in as newlyweds also had possums. The poor things aren't treated well by Chicago winters, but the winters are getting more mild, so I imagine the number of possums will increase.

This year, I've also been seeing an increase in rats. They're out looking for food because their normal food sources - restaurants and fast food joints - have shut down. I feel sorry for them; rats are smart, adaptable, family-oriented, all good things. I don't want them in my home, and I am aware of the diseases they carry thanks to fleas; I also have a healthy respect for them: I won't approach one. Still, I feel for them.

Bunnies are much more photogenic.
