And I just got confronted by the "you need to agree to the Oath-issue Terms of Service" screen as I tried to log into Flickr tonight.

Also, just read about the SmugHug/Flickr thing seconds ago...and speaking of SmugMug...who owns them? Some of my friendly acquaintances in SF fandom and pro-dom have heard of before tonight, but I didn't.

Why should I trust them for my online photo-hosting?

I know. I got the OATH thing the other night for Yahoo. I give up. They[1] are going to aggregate my data whether I agree to it or not. After reading this[2] back in the day, I knew I was just a burger flipper and the students were the burgers. This is just more sophisticated selling of mailing lists.

The believers in social media and big data and analytics hold out this dream to me that they are going to understand my every secret need and point me towards the things that will satisfy those needs. Hah. They still have the same crap to sell as always. Just like the novelty of door-to-door salesmen, this too will never deliver on the hype.

I could save them a lot of trouble: I want to be prettier, smarter, healthier, and I wish to crush my enemies under my sandals. There: all done.

The thing that surprises me is that the very same night I'm first confronted directly with this change of TOS at Flickr because of the previous change of ownership, they make this new announcement of another change of ownership of Flickr. It's a "Yeahbuwha?" moment.
