Blue Beetle(DC): Written by John Rogers, now operating solo in the wake of Keith Giffen's departure as co=writer. Regardless of who's doing the artwork, be it Gaijin Studios' Cully Hamner or others, John's scripting is itself worth the price of admission.
The series centres on the misadventures of Jaime Reyes, an El Paso teenager who's stumbled into being the current keeper of this particular legacy name and the signature weaponized lifeform called the "Scarab" that goes with it.
The All-New Atom(DC): Written by
gailsimone1, based on a concept by Grant Morrison. Featuring Professor Ryan Choi in his efforts to use the technologies left in his care by his predecessor Ray Palmer to change the world for the better...only to find himself sidetracked by more immediate and ongoing crises.
Agents of Atlas(Marvel): Based on a concept established by a thirty-year old issue of What If...?, this mini-series has been loads of fun. Written by Jeff Parker, pencil artwork by Leonard Kirk(whose blog I should really recruit for the PBCA SF, Comics and Gaming Feed).
The characters of this one -- Jimmy Woo, Venus, Marvel Boy and others -- were all Big Names at Marvel in the 1950's. Some bright soul imagined a retcon where they'd become the equivalent of the Avengers for their time. From time to time, that idea would be briefly revisited, but with this series, the idea gets more fully explored. Adding in SHIELD -- since Jimmy was added to that group's roster back in the 1960's by Jim Steranko -- as part of the background explication and supporting cast is an added bonus for me.
More as I think of them...
