Ladies, gentlemen, respected others:

There's something in Hadeel Al-Shalchi's latest blog entry that's set me off on a rant of mine own.

As for the winter bundling-up rituals...Amen, Hadeel. I tend to think somedays that with all the stuff one has to put on just to go out for a walk, it might as well become a weightlifting workout as well as cardio exercise. That's what it usually ends up feeling like for many of us with the sense given by God to at least bears who heed the hibernation call.

Would that we could hibernate like bears do. Give ourselves 4 months off and literally go into voluntary comas. Unfortunately, assorted next door neighbours, business and defense partners and other interested parties might look a bit askance at adopting such medical practices, even though it might do us as a country a world of good. A pity, that.

I enjoy winter, but on most years what we experience as winter here in Southeastern Pennsylvania - in terms of both snowfall and average temperatures - is likely balmy compare to your stretch of cold, hard white. We've had seasons of desperate, sustained cold and some with wave after wave of snowfalls, but most years when Christmas rolls around we're more likely to have either nothing on the ground or some rain than we are snow.

As for a rant, I may be missing something but it doesn't strike me as loud, aggressive and/or bombastic enough for me to characterize any of it that way -- which is a good thing. I'd much rather have you being positive and upbeat than develop into an ugly (North) American.

In Ottawa, winter as often as not devolves into a grey and slushy mess. The "cold, hard white" is an occasional hazard, as are the ice storms that occasionally happen.

I'm still at a loss to decide which part of Canada in my personal experience has the harshest winters: Ottawa or Saskatchewan. Each has its own unique miseries...although each has their joys as well.
