Larry Cruz of the Robot 6 blog holds forth on why the movie worked despite Paramount management's opinion at the time.

Good to see others who can see the virtue in that work.

And yes, Larry, that particular Williams did play a superhero. Although that hero can't really visit his peers...under his real name. Yet.

I'm another one who seas virtue in that film. I've actually seen it in the theatre two or three (four?) times. It's a delight, and Williams nailed the role. (So did Shelley Duval in hers, for that matter.)

However, unlike Larry Cruz, I also think it's a pretty good musical. Harry Nillsen is a grossly underappreciated song-writer and there was some good ones in the movie.

When I first saw it, I thought it was awful. Now I'm fascinated by it. I think it's because I've seen more Segar and Fleischer in the meantime, and I've realized that it's a wonderfully uncanny live-action translation of the weirdness of those cartoons.
