Saw the advance screening at the Coliseum here in Ottawa tonight.

I'm going to keep it brief.

Performances from the actors were solid. Good choices by the casting people.

Combat scenes were Intense. Between that and the dialogue, which - sad to say - was entirely realistic where kids and teenagers talking to one another was concerned, I'd be inclined to make very certain that parents or other trusted adults see this one either before or with the kids they plan to take. Saying more than that goes into spoiler turf.

The foreshadows of future instalments are quiet, not drawing too much attention unless you're actively looking for them.

I like this version of Lois Lane as scripted and performed. Very much.

Oh, and one other thing: don't watch the 3D edition if you can avoid it. Your eyesight will thank you for it.

Opinions?

Assuming that folks know there be spoilers in comments:

The casting was great. I liked everyone as everyone. I liked the alternate story of how Kal got his costume.

That's about all I liked.

This was not a kids' movie. Superman (a) doesn't kill and (b) should absolutely, and without fail, be accessible to even young kids. This movie scared an 8-year-old. That's not right.

This was not a superhero movie. This was a sci-fi movie. I missed a memo somewhere where Zod turned into Khan. And boy, the Kryptonians had an awful lot of cool space-flying shit to be utterly destroyed by their planet's core collapse. I didn't buy it for one second that they were ALL doomed EXCEPT Kal and whoever happened to be imprisoned in the Phantom Zone when the planet blew up.

The fight scenes were too many, too overwhelming. After a point, they were numbing. I actually fell asleep during a couple of the battle scenes. My eyes couldn't follow the action. It was too jumpy, too blurry. I'm like, "Eff this, I'll wait until it quiets down." And that was in 2D.

I could not buy Superman as a protector or a figure of hope. NOT ONCE did S try to get ANY of the battles away from heavily populated areas. He saves a helicopter and a bus, but has no problem toppling HOW many buildings, ostensibly filled with THOUSANDS of the very humans that Zod is accusing him of 'loving'? Kal is all warm and fuzzy with Ma Kent and Lois, but beyond that, it's all collateral damage?

It was fun seeing Stabler and Toby (The West Wing) in there, though. And Henry Cavill is VERY easy on the eyes.
