Didn't know that, not that I ever felt like taking a picture of my ballot. I imagine there was some logic to it when the laws were made, but I can't figure out what that would be? I mean the only privacy you're violating is your own.
In Canada, the prohibition seems to exist under Section 281(a) of the Elections Act (http://www.elections.ca/content.aspx?section=res&dir=loi/fel/cea&document=part11_div09&lang=e#sec281). I suppose the rationale was the same as with the "no communication of results between time zones" rule, so as to prevent voter suppression effects.
