Milewski's been reporting for CBC an awful long time. Maybe not for as long as Peter Mansbridge or Joe Schlesinger, but he's an eminence in his own right. Anyway, he's in Davos, Helvetia/Suisse/Switzerland at the moment...

Occupy Davos? Leaders greeted by doubts about capitalism

'Capitalism, in its current form, no longer fits the world around us,' forum's founder says

So...I'd like to sit in on any debates between Prof. Klaus Schwab and our current Prime Minister. My suspicion is that they'd be both instructive and entertaining.

It kinda sounds like Schwab is stealing from Gene Roddenberry. I mean he says that the system needs to change, but fails to say how. Of course his speech is truncated in the article so perhaps the content was in the part left out?

Reading the text of the whole speech - or perhaps better still, seeing video footage if such is available - would likely be a good thing. Especially on these subjects.

It seems he's talking about a return to the old pre-labour union system, where the company owner acts as parent, or more commonly in practice, feudal lord to his employees. Yes there were some good ones, but there were bad ones too.

I recall hearing philosophy prof. who suggested that humanities first mistake was developing agriculture. That we should have stayed a hunter/gatherer society. Of course we can't turn back the clock that far...

Part of the issue is how do you change the economic system when you first have to change the system of government world-wide?

The first step is eliminate the leader/party system. Elect individual representatives. You don't need a leader beyond a Speaker of the House type. If a crisis occurs, you appoint a leader temporarily on an "as need" basis. They step down when no longer needed.

Of course, there is NO WAY IN HELL anyone would agree to such a system. One which hasn't existed since the early days of the Roman Republic.

Corporate leaders as feudal lord-like figures?

This is something - if I remember a'right? - that David Brin in particular's been warning against in recent years' worth of blog postings. With cause. He's of the mind that "neo-feudalists" have captured the Republicans. We can argue later over who serves that cause on our side of the border.

And there was a reason that people don't remember the Roman Republic very well at all, wasn't there?
