DC's made the announcement:

http://dcu.blog.dccomics.com/2011/01/03/dcu-in-2011-dc-nation-letter-columns-return-to-dc-comic-books/

[livejournal.com profile] liabrown, weren't we talking about this earlier today?

Good. The promotorials were clearly running out of gas. They started with great enthusiasm when Dan DiDio started, then it was fobbed off to editors who clearly didn't want to be there, then degenerated into one-panel image previews.

Despite "everything" being on the Internet, there's still a value to having letters in the forum of publication, to keep it all on the record.

We were! I just saw the announcements on Twitter, and it weirded me out with the timing. But a nice change, I think.

The timing was definitely a surprise. Hopefully a good one.

What a fascinating development. Seems to me that DC Comics should never have taken the Letters Page out of its title lo those many years ago.

Some of the most fascinating reading I can recall in the old Legion Adventure Comics and even the Superboy period was the letters, and some of the cool thoughts and ideas.

Looking forward to seeing this stuff again, and perhaps this means that they'll announce the Legion leader voting results in the Letters page of the comic! :)

We may hope for that!

To be honest, I think I might have tried something a bit different. Word is that even pre-Internet, the number of printable, interesting, letters could still be pretty low. I might have tried going out and recruiting known bloggers or commentator types and getting them to write essays or humor pieces or interview creators or whatever.

I'd hope that those options aren't off the table in any case. If they decide to take the page counts per book back upward again, those might be good options to consider using.

Also, in-universe text features. We've both enjoyed more than a few of those in certain titles over the years.

I suspect the decision was in the works for a little while, and I'd be interested to know how little a while...

Likely at least a few years. If statistics having been generated for internet verse book generated letters and whether it was worth printing the page and if it makes a difference in sales.
