Keeping an eye on the inbox today as I inks myself some more page art this afternoon.

Meanwhile, for fellow fen of [livejournal.com profile] dduane - particularly those of you in the Ottawa-Gatineau area - I refer you to Perfect Books for her latest book, Omnitopia Dawn.

Also, trying to get a handle on news regarding the next TV incarnation of the Saint, and somewhat confused by what I've been reading today. Any clues you can forward would be deeply appreciated.

A new TV SAINT?

Be awesome if they did it right this time.

I'd love to see it done in-period, and acknowledging Templar's criminal past. But then I know I am bound to be disappointed.

No doubt, a period series would be a kick and a half. This was a guy who'd gotten away with everything from murder to blackmail, thanks to a Royal Pardon at least the once for keeping World War 2 from happening nine years early.

There should be an entry coming up devoted to my opinion of Burl Barer's Capture the Saint. My feelings on that volume are...conflicted.

I've only read the Charteris books, and those when I was 10 or 11 years old.

Accept no subsitutes.

Seeing as the Barer novel was approved by the Charteris estate, and that Barer also wrote a novelization of the Kilmer movie that felt more like a Saint story than the actual movie did...it seemed fair to me to give the newer novel a try.

I've been slowly building up my collection since my teenage years. Blame - or praise - Ian Ogilvy and Roger Moore for that.

Well, you're right, of course--the Saint stories were often contributed by people other than Charteris, with his blessing. But without Charteris himself overseeing it, it still feels like a rip-off to me. I admit I am prejudiced about this topic, though.

Just look at what happened to DUNE and AMBER under the approval of the late authors' estates (in the latter case, in spite of Zelazny's express wishes).

The man is a genuine and respectful fan, it shows in the work(both the movie novelization and the original novel), and most of the better-known longtime fen of the Holy Terror seem reasonably pleased with his handiwork. A couple of them even got name-checked in the course of the new story.

As to the Amber and Dune examples...well, I admit to not being too familiar with either one, so I'll defer to your POV on it.
