I would note that this ceremony also happens in the context of the 30th anniversary of the Tiananmen Square Massacre, and the 75th anniversary of D-Day. These events exist in one another's shadows, and there is a common thread of human rights in them all. Human rights, defended. Human rights, denied. Human rights, restored, we hope.
