I am a massage therapist who regularly deals with all kinds of repeat strain injuries and tendinitis. Feel free to dm me for questions and suggestions? I’m not a doctor but I can help you rule out some possibilities and point you towards things like YouTube videos by physical therapists for the kind of pain you’re having.
Oh, if you need to know whether to go to a doctor, then i generally recommend the three week mark of resting it as much as possible and it not showing marked improvement. Hope your pain goes away soon.
I always thought the sign of carpal tunnel was pain, I didn't know it was numbness until I took an algebra class and by the end of the semester could no longer hold a pencil! It didn't impede my typing as there are two sets of tendons per finger, but still, had to get it fixed.
And that stress on my body kicked my immune disorder into high gear and began the first of my five pneumonias! Far too much fun.
RSIs are tricky in that they're really individualized about whats wrong and what works to deal with it. It can also take a while to know if changes are helpful esp at first. And when I first ran into it the medical solutions were not very good.
Bigger companies used to have ergo folks who could come and do evals, make recommendations and demo some gear to see how it worked. Bigger citues used to have a couple ergo shops that could do the same. Now?
I had some good results with particular ergo keyboards, touch pads, positioning and techniques, nsaids, ice, stretches and strengthening and some massage. And yes, rest. The key was listening to my body and cutting down on the irritations; esp at first until getting the inflammation and muscle tension down. Oh and it may not just be hands+arms. I found issues all the way back into my neck and shoulders.
As for calling it "damage", I'd suggest holding off on that term for now. You wont know that until things are calmed down and time has gone by. Things can heal and recover once the irritations are sorted.
Its scary stuff but it is possible to sort it and keep it minimized.
I was hoping to get it looked at last night, but the wait dragged on too long for my brain to tolerate. So it's been rescheduled for three weeks from now.
