Tough Days

It's been a bit of a horror show in real life this last couple of weeks for a couple of different reasons. Two of them were the murders in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu and Ottawa last week. Another reason, in a different way, was the Ghomeshi revelations.

Today guest-host Piya Chattopadhyay started off today's installment of Q thusly:

"We are reading what you are reading. We are hearing what you are hearing. And it's tough. We want to thank you for being here. We are Q."

She was putting a lot into rebuilding the community of production team + listening audience with that short set of opening remarks. Chattopadhyay usually eschews opening remarks completely when she guest-hosts on Q, and the change was a mild surprise...until she was done.

To be honest: it felt at times as if I was intruding on some sort of grieving/therapy session by listening to today's installment. Some of the bridging music selections brought it to mind, as did the interview with Margo Howard of "Dear Prudence" fame over at salon.com. Particularly when the subject of divorce came up.

I am still a supporter of Q. I've been far less sure where its founding host is concerned since the revelations started this past Sunday. Not as sure as I once was. I've seen a lot of argument going this way and that over different aspects of that news story. Participated in some of that argument, despite my being unsure of my own thinking on the subject.

And I doubt it'll be over any time soon.

It will be, as Chattopadhyay said, tough.
