Yesterday, I needed to be reminded that "eavestrough" is a word and what it's used for.

Well, if it matters, I didn't know it was a word at all?

So I learned something today! Yay!

(I suspect my family just calls them gutters even when they're not, technically.)

Actually, they are gutters. That's the generic term for the job they are used for. "Trough" is another generic. Water trough/gutter installed on an eave. I've installed a bunch of them. What they're called varies on which area of the country you're in. One of the fun things of dialect. (A hobby of mine.)
