Lots of city-watchers are speculating that this is a cover for something much worse. But it could also be terminal burn-out and a realization that the city and his career are tanking. He really shouldn't have run for another term ... if he'd stepped down last year, most people would probably have remembered him as a good mayor. Not now.

I am among such speculators. You may well have a point about burn-out having a more central role in his motives. I don't think it's an "either/or" situation here.

The latest terrifying theory is that he's making room for Drug Fraud to run for the position he has always wanted more even than being the premier of Ontario ...

(Affair, maybe, but you’d think someone I once heard described as “the human embodiment of a sweater vest” would have been discreet about it.)

As usual, not a word about it in my US news sources. I had to go to cbc.ca to find the story, along with a bunch of other interesting unrelated things. One of them was even about Us events, but not covered by anything I saw in the US,

For me the story was one big yawn. I've never been a big fan of John Tory but does an affair, in and of itself, make him unfit to be mayor? Now, if he had made the woman's job or a promotion conditional on sleeping with him, or if he had insisted she go braless and flirt with prospective supporters at parties (like someone I'm sure you've heard about), that would be another matter...
