My Epson WF-7840 keeps throwing off "paper length does not match" messages, "turn off and on" messages, and other kinds of error messages. I'm thinking that I should never have downloaded those firmware updates.

Whoa, I was having that problem yesterday when trying to print a recipe from a recipe app we use. Normally I have to tell it to print from the paper tray because it defaults to the rear feed for whatever weird reason, but yesterday it was complaining about paper length and trying to print from the rear tray no matter what.

You might check and see if you can download the (current - 1) firmware and upload it. If the printer doesn't keep track of serialization, and there's really no reason for it to, that might put it straight.
