Ha! Well, I have to say it was the first thing that came to mind for me, too, based on the headline. The couple steps between old cell phones and feeding the hungry weren't immediately obvious to me, though the article made it clear. A nice program, though!

A family member of mine used to work at a women's shelter. They took in old cell phones to give to the women. As long as they had a battery in them, calls to 911 was free and they could use them in case they were attacked.
