Updating my cleverphone apps now that I've got my shopping, banking and newspapers in hand for the day. I'm a bit annoyed at having put off the newspapers as that meant I missed The Globe and Mail but that can't be helped.
Also, only mildly surprised that my preferred bank branch is closed on this particular Saturday, but at least I was able to confirm that I could get my bus pass topped up for next month. Just in case.
Job search question: who here knows anything beyond Wikipedia reports and the company website about a Vertex Venture Holdings company? I got a text message from someone claiming to represent them on my cleverphone asking if I was interested in an online interview. Is this really part of their normal hiring routine?

you can look up companies.
When I enter just "Vertex", a whole slew of companies with the name Vertex as part of their names comes up. That can mean that Vertex is a buzzword like "gecko" was in the 90's. Or, that can mean that a company has split up its ventures to limit risk if they are doing somthing with a high chance of failure. So it could either be a really massive company - or a shell game.
I would expect something really big to use recruitment companies.
Check their website for the email structure and match it to the email that has contacted you.
I have heard of employment scams where they either want your money (easy red flag) or they want your ID - sounding extremely legit and offering you a contract so that you supply SIN and scans of credentials.
I haven't got the nerve to do this, but if it sounds really tasty and you still are suspicious, you could call the company's HR and ask to speak to blah de blah. There are always contact names and numbers in the financial statements etc that are filed publically.

If your number is out there in a professional capacity - it's possible that somebody got your name by grapevine. If not, then it's killer rabbit time.
