I have to admit to being a latecomer to the ranks of fans of the Doctor. I'd seen episodes from time to time in the first couple of years after moving to Ottawa, but lost interest after a while.

Last year, that was rectified by the arrival of the new series. I was pleasantly surprised to find CBC providing whatever degree of backing they have to the new series, to the point of airing the series so soon after UK viewers got their dibs: a mere week's difference, as it turned out. Mr. Ecclestone and Ms. Piper delivered on the fireworks, visual and otherwise, in spades.

And now Mr. Ecclestone's gone, and we have a new guy.

Well, from what I understand, it's not the first such change the lead of Doctor Who has undergone over the decades. First time they were able to make the transition in true style, though, in my eyes.

And tonight, we'll have the "Christmas Invasion" to properly introduce the Tenth Doctor.

Looking forward to it.

I've yet to see any of this latest incarnation - nothing down here is carrying it - but I've heard almost nothing but good things about the production this time.

I recall reading some flap about this particular episode at least being interpreted as an anti-war message with an overt or covert aim taken at the current action in Iraq, though later reports made it seem as if the first reactions were, well... people being too reactionary and seeing a specific message where one wasn't intended.

Definitely an overreaction from where I'm sitting, regardless of any statements made by Davies, Tennant, Piper or other directly-involved parties in the production company.

The ending is such that I can understand both sides' positions on the issue...and find them both to be right and wrong on specific aspects of the argument they were having. Whether or not the two characters in question realize this themselves, and choose to admit it to themselves and each other...I have no idea yet.

Suffice to say, I see two people trying to do the right thing disagreeing with tragic results. For now, at least...
