Yep. Yay. This is a thing they've been keeping watch over for a few years now, ever since my regular eye doctor's people spotted the "spot" at the back of one eyeball.
A friend of mine suffered a detached retina, which obviously requires surgery. Sadly, during the procedure, the surgeon touched the retina with the surgical instrument, permanently damaging it. He just had a second procedure a couple of weeks ago that apparently provided some improvement and that seems to be stable.
