Note to Friendlisters Attending SDCC 2019

To those of you going, I hope you have a good time of it, a safe time of it.

Take care, okay? I won't be going ever again, but it's a good event.

I did not know you are a former attendee. I went in the late '80s/early to mid '90s, starting at the old convention center. It's just too bloody big, I can't fathom the line wait. Too big for its own good.

I went to SDCC twice. Being Canadian, attending that event involved financial logistics that I couldn't manage more than once a decade as it was.

And the second time I went, in 2002, my father had the stroke at the airport that signalled his metastasized cancer had finally lost all patience with him. I went through with the trip anyway but I think the whole process of finding out what was going on back home in Ottawa deranged some of my behaviour towards some of my friends also attending.

(He died the following Christmas morning. It took months from first stroke to last breath.)

And then there was the security theatre coming back home again.

And then the reports of the added security theatre affecting other people I've never met.

I'm not leaving Canada to go anywhere else ever again. That's been spoiled for me.
