It's abusing the Charter and the Constitution to achieve some sick payback. And to set precedent for worse things yet to come, I'm sure of that. I live in an opposition-held provincial riding right now, so here's me wondering if Ford and company are planning something similar for Ottawa the city next.

The feds have got Trump to cope with, so that knocks a lot of what should be front-burner issues down to low-heat backburner status.

Like Ford's perversion of the Notwithstanding Clause into a fascist weapon. The surviving parents of the Clause can damn him all they want and it won't matter to him. It's there, he's going to use it on the rest of us.

I can't go to Toronto. Financial limits and obligations hold me here in Ottawa the city for now. All I can do right now is denounce Bill 5 AKA Bill 31 from the sidelines.

From what I've read about this, it's horrendously fascist. But he's a Ford.

I'm just heartsick that this is happening in Canada, but the truth compels me to understand that those impulses have always been there in Canada, just not as easily spotted as they've been in the U.S. I think back to the transformation of what was the Progressive Conservative party in my youth to the monstrousness of what the Conservative party is today; the western conservativism, the hidden, and not-so-hidden, gun love ... I can't deny those things.

Thanks for the link (for various horrified powers of "thanks"); she's echoing every single specious argument the NRA has ever mustered. I also love her disingenuous comment about how "gun rights advocates" aren't people going around with guns in their glove compartments - and then she happily takes a picture that deliberately says "Hey, I'm a sexy woman with a big gun - guns are cool!!"

Ugh. Ugh to the infinite power.

Yep, pull every trick out of the book to pass your agenda, and consider burning down the Reichstagg and blame it on the Communists. Here, the Senate has kept itself in session throughout August by having one Senator go in every three days and bang the gavel to prevent Herr Drumpf from firing Sessions and making a Recess Appointment.

It's an amazing thing to see not how government doesn't function, which we've seen, but how the function of government can be twisted and perverted.

And then there's all those appointments to the judiciary that McConnell also wants so badly to get in while his side still owns Congress...

They have gotten a staggering number of judicial appointments through, the Dems haven't had the numbers to fight successfully.  I don't know that they can stop the SCOTUS appointment, but this is a fight they need to fight. McConnell has less than zero credibility with me, I absolutely loath that turtle.  Lindsey Graham, admittedly he's shattered at losing his boyfriend, recently said that "you have to win if you want to appoint Supreme Court Justices" apparently doesn't remember that Obama appointed a Supreme Court Justice and that The Turtle robbed him of that appointment.

I would love nothing more than to win a billion dollars, buy a house in Kentucky, and destroy The Turtle's chance of getting reelected by any dirty trick possible.  But he'd probably just retire and smirk in to the sunset.
