He helped us make sense of the universe.

(Or should that be "multiverse"?)

He warned us of some bad choices he believed we ought to avoid making.

He's already missed.

I've lost two friends to ALS, it was amazing he lasted as long as he did with it.

His longevity was definitely an outlier, one that I suspect many researchers in the field still hope to remake into a more standard outcome.
