Nation-wide statutory holiday up here today. What the day's called depends on where in Canada you live. I think I prefer Simcoe Day because of the anti-slavery implications, despite living in Ottawa where it's tagged Col. By Day for the leader of the canal-builders of the 1820's.

It's neither a national holiday nor statutory. It's not a thing in Quebec, Newfoundland and Labrador or the Yukon. Also, it's only a statutory holiday in Manitoba, Saskatchewan, British Columbia, New Brunswick, Nunavut and the Northwest Territories. In the other provinces, including Ontario, employers are not obligated to give employees a day off, which is why most things are still open (at least here in Toronto) today.

I also like the idea of Simcoe day, which is why I get really annoyed with how Simcoe is portrayed in Turn: Washington's Spies -- a show I otherwise quite enjoy. They have him come across as a psychopath.

I call it Picnic Day because we don't really have a reason to have a stat today other than that it is nice to have a three day weekend at the height of summer.
