It's about 12.5 lightyears away, located in Aries, and we've only known of this star for about 15 years. And already, we have two exoplanets orbiting it...and they might be livable.

Interesting...and I think we'd have found out about this one after Star Trek: Star Charts was published, right?

On a positive note, with help from the International Astronomical Union (who will have no clue that I'm promoting one of their projects if you don't tell them)...

What if Ferenginar is a victim of runaway climate derangement?

Just announced this month, apparently. Jovian-class by the looks of it, but fully expecting that further research will ensue from this particular discovery.

Here's a new resource, from down Puerto Rico way:

Considering that they're tied into the Arecibo operation, this might be fair game for keeping bookmarked alongside exoplanet.eu, SIMBAD, and a few others besides.

Related question that I've been meaning to ask elsewhere: Has the exoplanet portion of the Celestia core database been updated yet?

A lot of us have likely read the news about the International Astronomical Union's ongoing discussions over what constitutes a proper planet. BBC reports that they're considering setting up a new category using Pluto as the template for the class. Officially, the proposed class name would be "Pluton".

I'm certainly amused (mildly so) by all the inadvertant Trekspeech being tossed around at the IAU's press conferences...although once they get that settled, they'll then have to nail down an official name for 2003 UB313, one of the candidates for "Pluton" status.

Hoping that Persephone wins out here...because the alternative has already been established as resorting to pop TV culture. I think we ought to save that for the extrasolar planets, yes?

Assuming that any locals we find on those planets don't consider it grounds for war against us, of course...
