Every so often, I feel compelled to try out new software "toys" on one or more of my computers. Thankfully, there's more than enough open source stuff to keep me busy if I really have to scratch that particular itch.

Today, I'm considering three different items, two of them open source, the other payware, all available via the Mac Format(UK Edition) # 161 cover disc, all for the iBook:

  • Scribus 1.3: a DTP package that looks interesting enough to someone who's eyed users of Pagemaker, InDesign and Quark with no small amount of envy for some years now.

  • oXygen/: an XML editor. Not sure if I really need this at the moment, given all the web-editing stuff I've already got on my Windows and Mac hardware at the moment, most of it focused mainly on HTML. But I have to admit to some curiosity.

  • Inkscape: An open-source competitor with the likes of Adobe Illustrator and Corel Draw. I'm still Corel-loyal, but if they're still staying done with Mac after v.11...

Back to you, friends and neighbours.
