The little minesweepers of the Canadian Navy were built this way, too (I got to watch one of them being assembled). The bow sections were built in PEI, and shipped to Halifax to be merged with the other parts.

Different tasks for each type of ship, different sizes, but I can't imagine the construction/assembly process being less complex for all that...?
