I have to say, I can't really see Eddie Izard as Steed.

Neither can I, but I've not seen a whole lot of his work to begin with. So I've not much with which to make an informed judgement.

Ironically, Eddie played one of Sean Connery's henchmen in the last Avengers remake movie. But I think he's mainly known for stand up and cross-dressing. But like you I haven't seen much of his work.

I think I'm in the camp that believes there can only be one John Steed...

And it may be too soon since Macnee's passing for us to consider anew the idea of a possible successor to the role.

Lady Diane Rigg still being with us for the moment - if otherwise employed over on Game of Thrones for now - might be in a position to organize a proper succession of lead characters completely out of new cloth.
