About that ending?

I should've seen that coming.

Not Whitehall, mind you. What happened just before that.

1) Pretty sure I didn't like it much either for various reasons.

2) Thanks much!

I have to say, the show was pretty clever about that.

That twist was one I should have seen coming from a mile off. I knew they had to have a Reason for the new guy to stick around full-time, and this would be the sort that would fit the bill for him. I just didn't think to expect it because of all the effort put into promoting the sacrificial lamb as if it were something else.

They definitely spent some serious coin to get the ball rolling here and it showed.

Yep. I think the show realized that with Arrow's continuing cult status and the three new upcoming series it had to step up its plot game - especially since Arrow did have some clunker episodes last season which gave Agents a little bit of a chance.

It's interesting, though, that's the show decided to visually go darker this year - filters, cameras, dark enclosed places and all that - just as two more shows that will presumably stay visually darker (Gotham and Constantine) are popping up. Maybe they figure that since Gotham isn't going to have superpowers, Constantine is going to be something totally different, and Arrow is claiming that it's going to back off the superpowers this season (yeah, right) that the show they visually needed to distinguish themselves from is Flash, which from the trailers (I haven't seen the leaked promo) looks as if it's going to be very brightly filmed?

I'm speculating.

Noticing this: some of the darkest stuff that happens in Agents of SHIELD happens in well-lit spaces. Laboratories. Open highways. That sort of venue.

Now that I think about it, Arrow occasionally pulls the same trick, although its three darkest moments this season were in relatively poorly lit locations.

Granted, in one case, that was to hide the CGI issues. Not entirely successfully, I might add, though they didn't linger on the shot, and usually the show is well shot. Agents doesn't have that same CGI issue, so they can do stuff in a well lit environment and not worry that people will say, uh, yeah, about that sword ...
