Which is going to get the attention of [livejournal.com profile] mdg1, [livejournal.com profile] fajrdrako, [livejournal.com profile] shanejayell and a few others reading this regularly. There's already been some discussion re: which characters are going to get the nod as part of the core cast for this pilot movie...which many of us want to see get the "ongoing series" nod from ABC(Disney) already and never mind all the hemming and hawing.

(Also, for [livejournal.com profile] fajrdrako: here's the improved version of my SHIELD LJ icon. Use it in good health so long as you don't sully the reputations of the Directorate, the UN Security Council, Marvel, ABC or Disney...)

Ahem.

Okay, casting.

I have no inside sources. No scoops. Forget it. I'm speculating wildly here just like the rest of youse.

I can't see them springing for Jackson to play Fury half a year every year for the next five to seven. Not unless some serious horse-trading happens. Also, Jackson's got work outside of the Marvel movies to keep doing, if only to keep from going crazy from boredom. He's a hardcore comic book fan, but he and his agent(s) have to be well aware of the perils of burning out on too much of a good thing. So there's that.

Smulders, playing Maria Hill as Fury's right hand...is perhaps more likely. They might even use that recently-released clip of Hill's after-action report to the "World Security Council" on the Battle of Manhattan as a plot springboard. Her regular TV gig may be about to go into its final season, in which case Smulders might be looking for a change of scenery medium to long-term. And playing an action heroine soldier-spy would certainly be a change from her serial soap-comedy gig on How I Met Your Mother.

Johansson and Renner as the Widow and Hawkeye...are, I suspect, similarly out of budgetary reach despite their depiction in the Marvel Movie'verse as SHIELD agents first, super-heroes second. If Marvel surprises us, so be it. But I'm not expecting that to happen.

Maximillio Hernandez as Jasper Sitwell? Probable. He's new to my knowledge and they can probably afford to nail him down for a few years if everything goes according to hope and plan.

Clark Gregg returning as Phil Coulson? Well, despite how Coulson made his exit from Avengers - and a well-staged exit it was, final or not - there are ways to get around that. Some of them already suggested in the movie itself as presented at the theatres. And the character's got a lot of goodwill built up with the audience.

So there's those considerations.

The next thing is this: three characters alone will not, I think, make for a successful series. SHIELD feels like it ought to be an ensemble show. So they're going to need to fill out the hand somewhat. And over the past half-century, a lot of characters have been created as SHIELD agents, or later became such after their creation. So Marvel and Whedon's production team have lots of options.

A poll on which characters are most likely to be used might be in order. Or, if you'd rather not wait for that, speculate away in the comments!

I would expect Fury to cameo in the pilot (maybe via vidscreen so his scenes can be done separately) briefing Sitwell/Hill/whomever on their new assignment, and introducing their new team (i.e., the new characters) before dropping out of the series entirely, save for the occasional cameo.

In other words, rather than being a show about _all_ of SHIELD, they can focus on one team, and leave the widescreen stuff for... well... the wide screen. :)

The idea of focusing on one small team of investigating officers handling their "beat" for the purposes of the TV series should that go ahead works for budgetary purposes.

That being nailed down, which characters would you pick?

Honestly, I probably would create new characters. Most of the big names (Contessa, Clay, Dum Dum) are too high rank for a branch office.

I'd consider Dum Dum out of reach owing to other factors, for sure.

Quartermain and di Fontaine? Probably, if they're already being treated as part of the organization.

Part of the problem is, so many SHIELD stories are, at their core, Nick Fury stories. Hence, most preexisting SHIELD characters are inexorably intertwined with Fury (albeit a Fury who looks more like me than SLJ).

If you want Fury to exist in the background only, you lose a lot of possible stories to adapt. Strucker is out. So is Scorpio. Even Secret Warriors ended up being Nick-centric.

Better to start clean, with a general concept, than try to bring things too in line with the comics.

Fair point, that.

Better to use peripheral characters, if you use pre-existing ones at all.

I agree with mdq1 in that it'll probably be about a SHIELD office, rather than the entirety of SHIELD. Wonder if it'll jump off the special on the Avengers DVD, about the SHIELD unit that recovers alien tech etc etc?

That's a possibility. One of several.

Sidebar: They're gonna be years cleaning up that mess in Manhattan, aren't they?

Oooh, yeah. Which will be a big plot engine for the series, if they go that way.

So... New York office of SHIELD? Would be right in the thick of things.

Or LA, possibly, Focus on the Tony Stark end of the spectrum.

New York...which is also right next door to Fury's bosses' offices in Turtle Bay, even if they don't refer to the UN Security Council by that name in their Movie'verse. Lots of international visitors...

I can see a Los Angeles field office for any number of reasons, including but not limited to Stark.

Which geographical angle would be better for the budget?

Well, if it;s IN New York, they have to at least have cameos of the Avengers and Fury. And I assume even stock footage costs money.

LA might be easier.

Or they may set it in 'Backasswards, Nowhere' and avoid all those complications. Firefly-like group dramady on SHIELD agents out in the middle of nowhere could be fun....

The rumor I heard was that Marvel Entertainment/Disney was in talks with Clark Gregg to play the Vision in upcoming Avengers movies/related flicks.

That's about fourth hand rumor, though, so feel free to treat it with contempt. And that wouldn't leave out a possible returning guest role with the S.H.I.E.L.D. show.

No, it wouldn't.

And I've read the same "Vision" rumours. More on that another time, perhaps?

In a related vein, if you want comedy ask Kurt Busiek about who Clark Gregg was really playing.

I've seen some of that discussion on Facebook. Until Hernandez showed up in-character for "The Consultant", Kurt had a point.
