There's this gent named Cameron Booth, who's come up with a London Underground-styled map of what an ideal Euro-Highway network set up like the Trans-Canada or Interstate networks ought to look like as a finished work. Wondering about the reactions of my European f-list members to this particular idea, whether they've seen other proposals along these lines, and so on...?

The main question in my mind, relative to the American Interstate system, is how many of these roads are built to the same standards. Dwight D. Eisenhower proposed the Interstate after comparing his experiences with the Autobahn in WWII with his experience as part of an army convoy in 1919 on the Lincoln Highway, the first complete coast-to-coast highway in America. The condition of that road, at least west of Illinois, was atrocious; some of the bridges that they crossed collapsed under them, and the convoy averaged six miles an hour over the length of the trip. How many of these European roads are up to Autobahn standards?

Not all of the system is up to full two-lane, divided highway, especially the further east you go, but the UN guidelines for the system definitely indicate that such a road is the *preferred* option.
