So, I got word from Kieron Gillen's blog this morning about SWORD getting the chop at Marvel.

My reaction includes some...mild...dismay at the word of how retailer orders for # 1-2 may have decided the fate of the series before a single non-retailer pair of eyes actually read the books in question. After actually having read those issues, I'm surprised that the axe fell as quickly as it has. It's a fun read, at least to my eyes. But then, I have a natural sympathy for SHIELD spin-offs.

However, all may not yet be lost re: SWORD's future, as Kieron notes in the link above.

For details, however naively hopeful they may be, see this link. I'd prefer to be naively hopeful wherever possible myself.

The harsh reality of the direct market is no different now than it was, say, fifteen years ago - by the time readers get to see the first issue of a new book, most retailers have already made the purchasing decisions that will save or doom it unless the publisher is *really committed* to keeping it going even if it's a money-loser. But this is no longer a time where publishers can be really committed to money-losers.

...yeah. A certain amount of Sad Truth there, although I still harbour my irrational hopes for these things.

*bittersweet smile*
